Regular Season Round 21: Bilbao - Zaragoza 73-96
Date: January 23, 2021
Rather expected game when 17th ranked Bilbao (4-16) was crushed at home by fourteenth ranked Zaragoza (7-12) 96-73 on Saturday. Zaragoza outrebounded Bilbao 33-21 including 24 on the defensive glass. They shot the lights out from three sinking 13 long-distance shots on high 61.9 percentage. Bilbao was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. International forward Jonathan Barreiro (205-97) stepped up and scored 22 points and 8 rebounds for the winners and German center Elias Harris (203-89, college: Gonzaga, agency: BeoBasket) chipped in 16 points (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line). Four Zaragoza players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American guard John Jenkins (193-91, college: Vanderbilt) with 11 points and Lithuanian power forward Regimantas Miniotas (208-96) scored 12 points (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. The victory was the third consecutive win for Zaragoza. They moved-up to twelfth place. Bilbao lost their third game in a row. They dropped to the eighteenth position with 16 games lost. Zaragoza will face higher ranked Baskonia (#4) in Vitoria in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Bilbao will play on the road against Blusens Monbus (#14) in Santiago de Comp and hope to win that game.
