There was no surprise in Athens where 9th ranked Ionikos Nikaias (4-8) was defeated by second ranked AEK (9-3) 81-74 on Saturday. The hosts trailed by 3 points after three quarters before their 28-18 charge, which allowed them to win the game. AEK outrebounded Ionikos Nikaias 39-27 including 17 on the offensive glass. The best player for the winners was Angolan center Yanick Moreira (211-91, college: SMU, agency: BeoBasket) who had a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Lithuanian forward Jonas Maciulis (198-85) chipped in 12 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was the former international center Loukas Mavrokefalidis (207-84, agency: Network Sports International) who recorded 18 points and 5 rebounds and guard Nikos Chougkaz (206-0, college: NSU, agency: Network Sports International) added 15 points and 10 rebounds respectively. Five AEK and four Ionikos Nikaias players scored in double figures. Ionikos Nikaias' coach Vangelis Agelou rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. AEK maintains second position with 9-3 record behind leader Panathinaikos. Loser Ionikos Nikaias keeps the ninth place with eight games lost. AEK will face PAOK (#6) in Thessaloniki in the next round. Ionikos Nikaias will play on the road against Peristeri GS in Athens and hope to win that game.
