Regular Season Round 18: Focsani - Sibiu 70-87

There was no surprise when 10th ranked Focsani (4-11) was defeated at home by second ranked Sibiu (13-2) 87-70 on Monday. The game was mostly controlled by Sibiu. Focsani managed to win fourth quarter 23-19. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Sibiu dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Focsani's 36. They outrebounded Focsani 55-35 including a 19-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Sibiu made 7 blocks. The best player for the winners was American center Jayce Johnson (213-97, college: Marquette) who had a double-double by scoring 18 points and 16 rebounds. Canadian guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes (193-94, college: FSU) chipped in 17 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Five Sibiu players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was American forward Robert Sampson (203-92, college: Georgia Tech) who recorded 14 points and 7 rebounds and his fellow American import guard Jimmie Taylor (193-94, college: Rider) added 11 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists respectively. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Sibiu have an impressive five-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader. Focsani at the other side dropped to the eleventh place with 11 games lost. Sibiu are looking forward to face Pitesti (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Focsani will play against Miercurea Ciuc (#13) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
