Regular Season Round 8: Zalgiris I - Saule 84-80

There was a small surprise when eleventh ranked Zalgiris I (1-5) won against 8th ranked Saule (2-6) in Kaunas 84-80 on Sunday. Saule trailed by 11 points after 3 quarters before a 21-14 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 80-84 at the end of the game. They outrebounded Saule 47-33 including 34 on the defensive glass. Zalgiris I looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The winners were led by Povilas Zeimys (190-4) who scored that evening 32 points and 9 rebounds and forward Arijanas Maskaliunas (201-4) supported him with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Even 25 points and 9 rebounds by forward Domantas Sarauskas (200-4) did not help to save the game for Saule. Point guard Jokubas Stropus (168-4) added 14 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists for the guests. Four Saule players scored in double figures. Saule's coach Egidijus Vasiliauskas tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Zalgiris I left bottom position moving up to tenth place. Loser Saule dropped to the ninth position with six games lost. Zalgiris I will meet at home higher ranked Panevezio (#7) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Saule will play against KKM I and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
