Regular Season Round 17: Balkan - Shumen 112-76
Date: February 5, 2022
Very expected game in Botevgrad where 10th ranked Shumen (1-15) was crushed by third ranked Balkan (10-4) 112-76 on Saturday. Balkan dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Shumen's 32. They shot the lights out from three sinking 17 long-distance shots on high 68.0 percentage. Balkan looked well-organized offensively handing out 36 assists comparing to just 17 passes made by Shumen's players. The best player for the winners was American guard Derrick Marks (191-93, college: Boise St.) who scored 27 points (perfect behind the arc making all five shots). The former international Dimitar Dimitrov (203-93) chipped in 17 points (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field). Five Balkan players scored in double figures. Guard Aleksandar Milov (198-95) produced 33 points (!!!) (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) and Serbian center Dejan Bjelic (209-90) added 9 points and 8 rebounds respectively for the guests. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Balkan maintains third place with 10-4 record having four points less than leader Rilski. Shumen lost their seventh game in a row. Newly promoted team stay at the bottom position with 15 games lost. Balkan will meet Levski (#4) in the next round. Shumen will play against Cherno More (#9) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
