There was no surprise when 14th ranked Empoli (1-17) was outleveled at home by second ranked Venezia (13-2) 82-61 on Wednesday. Venezia made 18-of-21 free shots (85.7 percent) during the game. Venezia outrebounded Empoli 34-23 including 22 on the defensive glass. The winners were led by Senegalese-Spanish center Astou Ndour (198-1994) who scored that evening 21 points (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field) and American forward Kayla Thornton (185-1992, college: UTEP) supported her with 10 points and 4 steals. Even 17 points by the former international guard Sara Bocchetti (175-1993, agency: Interperformances) did not help to save the game for Empoli. Bulgarian power forward Katrin Stoichkova (177-1999) added 12 points for the hosts. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Venezia have an impressive eight-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains second position with 13-2 record having four points less than leader Schio. Empoli lost thirteenth consecutive game. They stay dead last with 17 lost games. Venezia will meet Sassari (#10) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Empoli will play against Broni (#13) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
