Regular Season Round 17: TSU - Batumi 71-82

Date: March 20, 2022
The most surprising game was a loss of top-ranked TSU (11-3) in Tbilisi on Sunday night. Hosts were defeated by fifth ranked Batumi (8-6) 82-71. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of TSU. The game was mostly controlled by Batumi. TSU managed to win third quarter 27-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. It was a great shooting night for Batumi especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.6 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Batumi made 8 blocks. 25 personal fouls committed by TSU helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The former international guard Beka Bekauri (209-1991, agency: BIG) orchestrated the victory by scoring 18 points and 8 rebounds. Power forward Ioseb Gognadze (205-1996) contributed with a double-double by scoring 12 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks for the winners. Senegalese power forward Pape Diop (204-1996, college: SE Louisiana) answered with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 14 rebounds and American guard Lovell Cabbil (188-1997, college: Liberty) added 14 points, 8 assists and 4 steals in the effort for TSU. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Batumi have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain fifth place with 8-6 record. TSU at the other side still keeps top position with three games lost. Batumi are looking forward to face Mega (#6) in Tbilisi in the next round. TSU will have a break next round.
