Regular Season Round 8: Shumen - Balkan 63-88

Very expected game when 10th ranked Shumen (2-6) was crushed at home by third ranked Balkan (6-2) 88-63. They made 20-of-26 charity shots (76.9 percent) during the game. The winners were led by the former international swingman Hristo Zahariev (198-1990) who scored that evening 22 points and 9 rebounds and Greek guard Nikos Diplaros (190-1997) supported him with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Four Balkan players scored in double figures. Even 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists by American guard Mike Adewunmi (196-1999, college: UTRGV) did not help to save the game for Shumen. Power forward Nikolay Georgiev (204-1995) added 17 points for the hosts. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Balkan have an impressive six-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains third position with 6-2 record having just two points less than leader Rilski. Shumen at the other side keeps the tenth place with six games lost. Balkan will play against bottom-ranked Akademik P. (#11) in Plovdiv in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Shumen will play on the road against the league's leader Rilski in Samokov and hopes to get back on the winning track.
