Regular Season Round 12: Perkunas - Saule 97-98

A very close game took place in Kaunas between Saule and Perkunas. Third ranked Saule (8-3) got a very close victory on the road over 9th ranked Perkunas (4-8). Saule managed to escape with a 1-point win 98-97 on Wednesday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. Perkunas was trailing by 2 points at halftime but managed to get 2-point lead after three quarters before a 30-27 charge of Saule, which allowed them to win the game. They dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Perkunas' 40. They outrebounded Perkunas 63-39 including a 48-33 advantage in defensive rebounds. Saule looked well-organized offensively handing out 33 assists. The winners were led by Joris Kacinskas (-2005) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 23 points and 17 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field) and Auridas Urbonas (-2005) supported him with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists. Five Saule players scored in double figures. Saule's coach Arunas Kacerauskas used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Even 33 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds by Laurynas Vilimas (-2005) did not help to save the game for Perkunas. Martynas Mejaras (-2005) added 20 points and 5 rebounds. Saule maintains third position with 8-3 record having just nineteen point less than leader VKKM. Loser Perkunas keeps the ninth place with eight games lost. Saule will meet at home Zalgiris II (#7) in the next round. Perkunas will play against Birzu in Birzai and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
