There was an upset when higher ranked Varese (14-11) was defeated at home by fourteenth ranked Reggio Emilia (9-16) 85-81 on Saturday. Reggio Emilia looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The former international guard Andrea Cinciarini (191-1986) fired a double-double by scoring 14 points, 6 rebounds and 13 assists for the winners. American-Hungarian forward Mikael Hopkins (206-1993, college: Georgetown) chipped in 17 points and 6 rebounds. Reggio Emilia's coach Dragan Sakota allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American guard Colbey Ross (185-1998, college: Pepperdine) produced 21 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists and the other American import swingman Jaron Johnson (196-1992, college: Louisiana Tech) added 19 points and 7 rebounds (made all of his seven free throws) respectively for lost side. Four Reggio Emilia and five Varese players scored in double figures. Reggio Emilia moved-up to thirteenth place, which they share with Scafati and Napoli. Loser Varese keeps the fifth position with 11 games lost. Reggio Emilia will meet at home higher ranked Treviso (#12) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Varese will play against Trieste (#11) and hope to secure a win.
