Regular Season Round 26: Covadonga - Betanzos 83-97

There was no surprise in Gijon where 14th ranked Covadonga (1-25) was defeated by eleventh ranked Betanzos (10-16) 97-83 on Sunday. Betanzos outrebounded Covadonga 51-32 including a 34-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Covadonga's players. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Betanzos made 7 blocks. American power forward Joseph Smoyer (211-1998, college: Chaminade) had a double-double by scoring 23 points, 15 rebounds and 6 blocks to lead the charge for the winners and point guard Jorge Abelleira (180-1997) chipped in 17 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists during the contest. Five Betanzos players scored in double figures. Alejandro Gomez (184-2004) responded with 17 points and Juan Noguero scored 14 points. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Betanzos moved-up to ninth place, which they share with 5 other teams. Covadonga lost seventh consecutive game. Newly promoted team keeps the fourteenth position with 25 games lost. They share it with Agora Portals.
