The Tartu team clinched the fourth straight win in the championship series. TU/Rock edged Rakvere 89:80 on the road to claim the title. Todd Abernethy (185-G-84, college: Mississippi) came up with arguably the best performance of the entire season. The guard tallied 30 points, 12 rebounds and 2 assists for the champions. TU/Rock overcame a slow start to take a 21:16 lead at the first break. The visitors stayed in front in the second period. TU/Rock arrived at the interval enjoying a 9-point lead 44:35. However Rakvere refused to surrender. The hosts went on a determined comeback rally in the third stanza. Rakvere cut the margin and eventually denied the deficit. The teams headed into the fourth frame tied at 62. But TU/Rock managed to eke out the victory. Led by Todd Abernethy the visitors pulled ahead and sealed the victory. Silver Leppik (185-G-83) netted 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for TU/Rock. Scott Morrison (212-C-86, college: Portland St.) had 13 points in the victory. Reinar Hallik (208-C-84) responded with 19 points and 7 rebounds for Rakvere. Rain Veideman (192-G-91) notched 18 points in the loss. TU/Rock take the Cup - Oct 12, 2009 TU/Rock - Kalev/Cramo 67:55 TU/Rock celebrated the first trophy in the season. They toppled Kalev/Cramo in Tallinn to clinch the Cup title. Scott Morrison (212-C-86, college: Portland St.) netted 17 points and collected 7 rebounds to lead the Tartu team. The hosts looked better in the starting minutes as they earned a 9:4 lead. But TU/Rock gradually took over. They capped the frame with a 14:2 rally to enjoy an 18:11 lead. TU/Rock continued to impose the tempo in the second stanza. They limited Kalev/Cramo to 11 points in the quarter to build a 35:22 lead at halftime. The third term turned into a bunch of nerves. Blagoj Janev got fouled out, while Nenad Vucinic and Gregor Arbet received technical fouls. All this did not allow Kalev/Cramo to get any closer as they trailed by 15 points heading into the fourth frame. Kalev/Cramo threw all they had to save the game but TU/Rock stayed calm and eked out a difficult win at the end. Janar Talts (205-C-83) and Martin Viiask (206-C-83) netted 13 points for TU/Rock. Talts added 11 rebounds for the winners. Rait Keerles (201-F-80) responded with 21 points and 8 rebounds for Kalev/Cramo. Erik Dorbek (196-F/G-82) netted 10 points in defeat. TU/Rock: Scott Morrison 17, Janar Talts 13+11 boards, Martin Viiask 13 Kalev/Cramo: Rait Keerles 21, Erik Dorbek 10 |
