KUBS prevented a clean sweep of Men's Division One trophies by Maree as they claimed the League Cup with an 89-79 win at the Watershed, Kilkenny. The Dublin side had finished runners' up in their maiden Division One campaign but a solid weekend at the League Finals game them their first trophy. Maree had six players on the score sheet in the opening quarter but KUBS had their eye in from the perimeter and Conor James (191-G/F-90), Kevin Foley (193-G/F-83), Jonathan Riles and Sean Ingle all registered three-pointers to go 28-13 clear. The Galway side rallied with an 11-0 run either side of the first break. The KUBS offence had hit a glitch and it took a strong drive from Eoin Chubb (188-G-90) to get them going in again. They led 44-41 at the half with free-throws pushing them clear after Maree equalised through Eoin Rockall (182-PG-98)'s 62.5% accuracy and Kenneth Hansberry's first half double-double. Both sides led by six or more in an undulating third quarter. Cathal Finn (178-PG-90) stepped up completing his double-double as Maree enjoyed their biggest lead the of the game but KUBS were 66-61 to the good by the end of the period. Eoin Chubb was the game-changer with eight points in a row and an MVP performance that included seven assists. Conor James' sixth triple of the afternoon came just when Maree threatened to draw level for the fifth time. The shooting guard finished with a game high 28 points while Player Coach Kevin Foley helped make sure of the win in taking his tally to 21 down the stretch. Courtesy of: basketballireland.ie
Maree earn Hula Hoops Presidents' National Cup title - Jan 31, 2016
Pride, passion and determination are the only words to describe a phenomenal victory by Maree BC in this evening's Hula Hoops Presidents' National Cup final that saw them scoop the title for the first time ever. Speaking afterwards, an overwhelmed Maree BC Head Coach John Finn stated: 'It's brilliant - our performance in the second half especially. We knew we were lucky to be only three points down at half time as we hadn't really played. 'Demons are so experienced and it was great to see the lads do well in the second half. It was brilliant the way some of the lads came on and just went for every ball, they never gave up.' Indeed, the clash between C&S Blue Demons and Maree BC was pipped from the off to be an absolutely thrilling game, and it delivered on all counts, as the game was tied nine times throughout. C&S Blue Demons were hoping to bag their third title in fourth years, but Maree, who had made it to the final for the first time, dug deep and had the crowd on their feet as they took control and drove to victory in the fourth quarter. Demons were first off the mark early on through Shane Duggan (F-88), while the hugely impressive and always on-form Kenneth Hansberry opened Maree's account. It was never going to be a simple win for either team though, and with superb scoring from Maree's Paulius Peldzius and Eoin Rockall (182-PG-98) matched brilliantly at the other end by Brian O'Neill and David Murphy it was game on. Demons held the lead going in at the break (38-34), after Shane McCarthy hit the target repeatedly and also assisted a number of his side's other scores, while Maree's Cathal Finn (178-PG-90) and Rockall were linking up at the other end in fantastic fashion and it was clear the game was going to go down to the wire. Rockall, Finn and Hansberry were all on target for Maree in the third, while McCarthy, O'Neill, Murphy and O'Leary kept Demons' scoring ticking over, and they again held the edge as the clock ticked into the last quarter (55-51). The fourth quarter though was where Maree showed their true spirit, and in a display full of pride and determination, slowly began picking away at the Demons offence. Rockall inspired from the top of the key, Peldzius made his presence felt and Hansberry was on target at every time of asking. Despite the best efforts of Buckley and McCarthy, there was just no breaking the momentum that was now firmly in Maree's favour, and they drove home to their first ever Presidents' Cup title in style.
