New Streaming Deal Marks a Seismic Shift for the NBA- September 3, 2024

The National Basketball Association (NBA) recently inked an 11-year media rights deal with Disney, NBC and Amazon Prime Video.
The groundbreaking partnership comes after the league rejected a $1.8 billion annual offer from Warner Bros Discovery to continue their long-standing relationship. The new deal is valued at around $76bn and was approved by the NBA’s Board of Governors. The agreement also includes the rights to the WNBA. One of the most eye-catching aspects of the deal is the exclusion of Warner Bros Discovery-owned TNT Sports, a longtime partner of the NBA for nearly four decades. Warner Bros Discovery had initially matched Amazon's offer, believing the NBA was contractually obligated to accept it. They had five days to match the deal and announced they were exercising their right to do so. However, the NBA deemed the proposal insufficient and ultimately decided to move forward with the Disney, NBC and Amazon partnership. The 2024/25 season will mark the end of TNT's nearly four-decade run as an NBA media rights holder, putting the future of the league’s flagship show in doubt. NBA’s Global Reach Targets IrelandThe new deal highlights the NBA’s desire to expand its global footprint in markets where sports fans are gravitating towards streaming platforms. This includes the Republic of Ireland, which boasts a sizeable NBA fanbase. One of the most popular clubs with Irish basketball fans is the Boston Celtics. The reigning NBA champions are heavily influenced by Irish culture, as evidenced by their ‘Lucky the Leprechaun’ mascot. Boston’s historically large Irish population further strengthens the links to the Emerald Isle. Amazon’s inclusion in the NBA's media rights deal is expected to further enhance the league's accessibility for Irish fans, which will have a ripple effect on the betting community. Celtics supporters in Ireland will have easier access to live games, allowing them to follow their favourite team while placing wagers on betting sites. Irish punters will be backing the Celtics to successfully defend their NBA championship, especially after their phenomenal performances last season. The streaming platform's on-demand feature also allows fans to watch games at their convenience, making it a safe bet for those who don't want to miss a moment of the action. The NBA's efforts to expand its global fan base align with the growing popularity of basketball in Ireland. The country has witnessed a surge in basketball participation at grassroots level, and the new media deal could fuel this growth by making the league more accessible to Irish audiences. The Impact on FansBasketball fans are buzzing about the NBA's new media rights deal, which promises to bring the game to more people than ever before. However, there are still murmurs of discontent among a section of the fans. One major point of discussion is the transition away from TNT, which could result in the loss of ‘Inside the NBA’, a beloved show that has been a staple of NBA coverage for years. Fans who have grown accustomed to the unique style and commentary of Charles Barkley, Shaquille O'Neal, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson may be disappointed if the show is no longer available. Another issue is the potential for increased costs. With games now spread across multiple platforms, including paid streaming services, some fans may need to subscribe to more than one service to watch all the games they want. This could make it more expensive for fans to follow all the action from the NBA, especially for those not already subscribed to these platforms. Streaming Takes Centre StageTraditional television has previously dominated the media coverage scene. However, with the media sector evolving rapidly, it could come down to which platform can deliver the best access to streaming. There is already a declining reliance on cable subscriptions, but experts predict that the number of non-streaming subscribers will be less than 35 percent by the end of 2027. The shift towards streaming is one of the standout aspects of the NBA's new deal. Amazon’s inclusion as a primary broadcaster clearly indicates that the future of sports broadcasting lies in streaming. The media giant will now air games on Friday nights, select Saturday afternoons and Thursday night double-headers, offering fans greater flexibility in how and when they watch their favourite NBA teams. Amazon will take control of the NBA League Pass package, providing fans direct access to a wide range of NBA content. NBC Universal's return to NBA broadcasting after a hiatus that lasted over two decades also marks a significant milestone for the league. The network was synonymous with the NBA during the Michael Jordan era and will once again play a central role in the league's media strategy. NBC will air games on Sundays, Tuesdays and during the play-offs, with some games exclusively streaming on Peacock. |
