Hapoel Jerusalem win State Cup-Feb 17, 2023
Champions League team Hapoel Jerusalem won the Israeli basketball State Cup for the seventh time after beating Euroleague side Maccabi Tel Aviv 67-61 in the final on Thursday evening. About 11,000 fans at Pais Arena in Jerusalem saw a close first quarter, ending 17-17 before point guard Kenneth Smith (190-PG-1993, college: Louisiana Tech) inspired Jerusalem to take a 40-31 lead at halftime. Points and rebounds by Josh Nebo (206-F/C-1997, college: Texas A&M, agency: BeoBasket) helped Maccabi reduce the margin to 54-48 at the end of the third quarter, and then points by Lorenzo Brown (196-PG-1990, college: NC State) cut Maccabi's deficit to trail at 61-59 with 2:33 on the clock. However, crucial points from Or Cornelius (198-F/G-1997) and Smith secured Jerusalem the cup which they received from Israeli President Isaac Herzog. Smith collected 16 points and 9 assists, while his teammates Oz Blayzer (199-F-1992) and Levi Randolph (196-G/F-1992, college: Alabama, agency: Slash Sports) added 12 and 11 points respectively for Jerusalem. Brown and Bonzie Colson Jr. (198-PF-1996, college: Notre Dame, agency: Octagon Europe) scored 15 points each for Maccabi.
