TA won the Israeli cup for the 33rd time
Maccabi Tel Aviv won the Israeli cup tonight for the 33rd time overall and 6th time in a row. Maccabi had to pass Givat Shmuel before lifting another trophy after a 96-83 win in a very exciting game. Maccabi Tel Aviv 96 - Givat Shmuel 83 Almost 10,000 people, one third of them from Givat Shmuel came down tonight to Yad Eliyahoo arena and witnessed a wonderful game of basketball between two of the best offensive teams in the Israeli league this season. Givat Shmuel, in its first ever Cup Final appearance, shocked Maccabi with a wonderful start. The 0-6 opener was just the appetizer. Givat, one of the shortest teams in Israel, took advantage of the mismatches and finished the first quarter with a 19-27 lead. Maccabi came back with a 9-0 run that gave the Yellows the lead for the first time tonight, but Givat didn't panic and by the end of the first half led by 1, 39-40. Charles Minlend scored 17 points already in the first half. In the 2nd half it was a completely different story. Minlend was paralyzed, as he didn't score a single point in the 3rd, and the brightest star of Maccabi, and MVP of the game, was Derrick Sharp. The frantic experienced guard did what he's most known for. Nailing 3-point shots and pressuring the PG of the opponent. Andre McCollum lost the ball twice before crossing the half court line, and Maccabi took another 9-0 run for a 64-59 lead after 30 minutes. Maccabi took off as the minutes passed by and the margin reached a high of 16. Aharoni and McCarty hit a few shots for Givat and all of a sudden Maccabi was up by no more than 7, 3 minutes to go, but if anyone had any doubts, came the play of the game by Derrick Sharp. Right after Givat reduced the lead to 7 and had a big momentum, Sharp got the ball with 4 seconds on the shot clock, and with 2 hands in his face buried another 3 pointer, that had "Game Over" written all over it. 96-83 was the final score. Maccabi (19+20+25+32): Sharp 18 - 4/7 3FG, Goree 18 + 9 rbs, Vujcic 17 + 8 rbs, Udrih 13 + 6 as, Burstien 11, Saffar 8, Shelef 7, Lewis 6 Givat (27+13+19+24): Minlend 24 + 8 rbs, Aharoni 19 - 5/8 3FG, McCarty 17 + 8 rbs, McCollum 11 + 5 as, Cohen 10, Brener 2 |
