Electra Ramat is the Champion of 2008-09 - Apr 21, 2009

Ramla - Electra Ramat 53-61
Ramat Hasharon bounced back from a miserable third quarter yesterday to defeat Elitzur Ramle 61-53 and claim the league championship final series, three games to one. 'They told us Ramle is a bunch of winners, but our women proved they have character and came back big in the fourth quarter after scoring only three points in the third,' said Rafi Bogatin , Ramat Hasharon's assistant coach.
The final game of the season was symbolic of the entire year - topsy-turvy and gripping yet not particularly stellar. Ramat Hasharon went up by as much as 14 points midway through the second quarter. Jia Perkins (173-G-82, agency: Merit Sports, college: Texas Tech) - who was the heart and soul of the team - hit a difficult three-pointer to open the second half and give Ramat Hasharon a 40-29 lead, but an injury to her and outstanding defense by Ramle held the regular season champs to just 1-for-12 shooting in the third period. Ramle scored 14 unanswered points through the remainder of the quarter to lead 43-40 going into the final 10 minutes. Advertisement
It looked like Ramle might maintain its perfect playoff winning streak on its home court, but Perkins came back and brought her team to life. Six lead changes then followed - Ramle took its final lead at 52-50 on a trifecta by Katia Levitsky with 4:30 to go. But it would prove to be Ramle's last basket of the season. Perkins took the game on her shoulders and Ramat Hasharon dominated the offensive boards down the stretch as Ramle's offense fell apart to go on a decisive 11-1 run.
'We ran out of steam,' said Ramle coach Eli Rabi . Orna Ostfeld , Ramat Hasharon's head coach, said the difference between yesterday's contest and the Game 2 loss at Ramle was that this time 'Ramle rallied in the third quarter, so we had time to adjust.'
After the game, Liad Suez Karni (190-F/C-81, college: Villanova) and Jia Perkins held up the championship plate, but the team was denied the honor of cutting down the nets because a second division game followed. Such is life in the women's professional ranks in Israel.
Nets or no nets, Perkins - who led all scorers with 17 points - was beaming after the game. 'We worked seven months for this, and it showed on the court. We went through so much this year, but we stuck together,' she told Israel's Sports Channel 5. Asked if she had expected to win the championship on Ramle's court, she replied she brought her party dress and shoes to the game. 'Watch me leave the locker room,' she said. 'I'm going to party!'
