Athleta triumph in the championship - Jun 13, 2011

Athleta claimed their favourites status sweeping the championship series against BUPA Luxol. Athleta celebrated a 76:55 win in the second game to clinch the title. It was the eighth crown for Athleta in their history. Michael Naudi (193-G/F-80) stepped up with 22 points to lead the charge.
Athleta gave little chance for Luxol right from the start. They recorded a 21:10 advantage ten minutes into the game. Luxol tried to bounce back in the second period but cut the distance to 10 points at halftime 26:36. Luxol got within 7 points early in the third term but it was far from enough. Athleta stepped on the gas and eased to a comfortable 19-point lead with one quarter remaining. The visitors never looked back and marched to a comfortable win at the end. Omar Said (177-G-80) and Dirk Schembri (193-F-85) finished with 14 points each. Addison Bonnici (195-F-84) accounted for 10 points for Athleta. Nebojsa Vasovic answered with 15 points for Luxol. Petar Apcev (199-F-89) and Jean Paul Bonnici (196-C-88) responded with 10 points each in the loss.

Siggiewi edge Athleta to clinch Detur Cup trophy - Jun 21, 2011

Siggiewi - Athleta 89:86

Siggiewi finished their season on a winning note. They overcame the newly crowned Maltese champions Athleta to clinch Detur Cup trophy. Marko Matijevic (200-F-78) stepped up with impressive 36 points to pace the winners.
Siggiewi showed their ambitions early in the encounter. They outscored Athleta for a 22:16 lead ten minutes into the game. Siggiewi stretched the margin in the second period. They arrived at the interval up by as many as 20 points 45:25. Athleta however did not say die showing their champions character. Steve Schembri (187-F-79) stepped up for Athleta as they cut the deficit at 6 points 49:55. Steve Schembri fouled out in the fourth period giving Siggiewi a chance to capitalize. But strangely it was Athleta who speeded things up even without Schembri. They got as close as five points 89:84 within the last minute. Omar Said (177-G-80) dragged Athleta within three points but Kristin-Paul Baldacchino (184-G-81) missed his three-point attempt and Siggiewi escaped with a narrow victory at the end.
Adrian Micallef (190-F-79) delivered 24 points, while Lee Ross (182-G-89) added 19 points for Siggiewi. Athleta answered with 21 points from Omar Said. Michael Naudi (193-G/F-80) topscored with 24 points in defeat.

Athleta retain Detur Super Cup - Jan 25, 2011

Athleta A-Z Electronics 62
(6-13, 15-12, 19-16, 10-21)

Athleta A to Z Electronics excellent season continued yesterday when they retained the Detur Super Cup following a 62-50 win over Siggiewi in the final.
Joe Galeas men, who had had the better of Siggiewi in the Detur Shield final in November, enjoyed a slight edge in the opening two quarters which were characterised by inaccurate shooting from both teams.
Athleta ended the first quarter 13-6 ahead but Siggiewi, inspired by Marko Matijevic (200-F-78) and Adrian Micallef, rallied in the second to narrow the gap to just four points, 25-21.
A balanced third quarter was shaded by Siggiewi who started the final 10 minutes only one point in arrears, 41-40.
Siggiewis improved performance in the third session raised the prospect of a thrilling climax. Peter Farrugias team went four points ahead early in the last session only to fade thereafter.
Athleta profited from their opponents shooting woes as they staged a stirring fightback to win the game 62-50, thus maintaining their unbeaten run in all competitions this season.
Siggiewis Marko Matijevic was the games top scorer with 18 points while Steve Schembri (187-F-79) was Athletas leading contributor with 17 points.
