Athleta AtoZ claimed the John Tabone Shield title after overcoming Luxol Sherries Estates 87-82 in an exciting final at the Ta' Qali Pavilion
Michael Naudi's side showed great character to recover from a difficult opening quarter, establish a commanding advantage and withstand a late Luxol comeback to lift the trophy. Akili Evans (196-G/F-2002, college: Lenoir-Rhyne) once again led the way for Athleta with 26 points, while Daniel Mayfield contributed 19 points and came one rebound short of a double-double. Nathan Xuereb added 17 points, with Sebastian Pace finishing with 15. For Luxol, Josiah Fulcher led all scorers with 23 points, while Andres Burney produced an outstanding double-double of 18 points and 17 rebounds. Mark Iloube added 17 points and Gregory Mizzi contributed 10. The final also featured a special coaching duel between two former Malta national team teammates, with Michael Naudi and Peter Shoults facing each other from opposite benches for the first time. Athleta AtoZ - Luxol Sherries Estates 87-82 (17-22, 21-9, 29-18, 20-33) Luxol made the stronger start, with Iloube opening the scoring before Pace responded with five consecutive points for Athleta. Burney then became increasingly influential inside, helping the Violets regain the lead as both teams exchanged baskets during the opening stages. Fulcher and Iloube helped Luxol establish a narrow advantage, but Evans kept Athleta within reach with a three-pointer. Burney continued to cause problems in the paint, while Gregory Mizzi connected from beyond the arc late in the quarter to give Luxol a 22-17 lead. Athleta responded emphatically in the second period. After Fulcher extended Luxol's advantage to four points, Evans took complete control of the offensive action, scoring six consecutive points to put his side ahead. The American continued his impressive spell with another five points, including a three-pointer, as Mayfield joined the scoring to complete a decisive 15-0 run. Athleta had turned a four-point deficit into an 11-point advantage. Luxol attempted to stop the momentum through Eric Fenech Pace and Fulcher, who combined for six unanswered points, but Matthew Sammut scored the final basket of the half to send Athleta into the interval with a 38-31 lead. The third quarter proved decisive as Athleta gradually took complete control of the contest. Fulcher and Iloube initially reduced the deficit through second-chance opportunities, bringing Luxol within three points, but Pace responded from beyond the arc. Mayfield then connected twice from three-point range, while Xuereb and Evans capitalised on Luxol turnovers to extend the advantage. Saba Ebelashvili also made an important contribution with two three-pointers as Athleta began to pull away. Evans added two dunks during the period, underlining Athleta's growing dominance, while Xuereb connected from long range to push the lead to 20 points. Burney scored late for Luxol, but Athleta entered the final quarter firmly in control at 67-49. Luxol refused to surrender and produced a determined response in the fourth period. Iloube and Fenech Pace reduced the deficit before Fulcher scored twice to bring Shoults' side within 12 points. Xuereb answered for Athleta, while Mayfield connected from beyond the arc to maintain some breathing room. However, Fulcher and Mizzi inspired another late charge, with Luxol producing a 12-0 run to cut the deficit to just five points. The Violets were suddenly back in contention, but Athleta showed composure when it mattered most. Two free throws from Isaac Bonett provided some crucial breathing space, and despite Luxol's continued pressure, Naudi's players managed the closing seconds effectively to secure an 87-82 victory. The final buzzer confirmed Athleta AtoZ as the new John Tabone Shield champions, capping an impressive tournament run in which they eliminated Hibernians before overcoming Luxol in the championship game. Athleta's breakthrough campaign Athleta's triumph represents a major achievement for Naudi's side, who entered the semi-finals as underdogs before producing one of the tournament's biggest surprises by eliminating Hibernians in overtime. They followed that performance with another strong display against Luxol, relying on the scoring production of Evans, Mayfield and Xuereb to overcome a difficult start and withstand a late challenge. For Luxol, the defeat ended an impressive Shield campaign that had included a dramatic semi-final victory over Starlites, but Athleta proved the stronger side when the trophy was at stake. After two major upsets in the semi-finals, Athleta AtoZ completed the job in the final and deservedly lifted the John Tabone Shield. |
