A thrilling weekend at Kavadarci for MZT Skopje's ninth Cup trophy - Feb 19, 2018

The 26th Macedonian Cup is behind us after a thrilling weekend at Kavadarci where MZT Skopje managed to grab their ninth Cup trophy and equalize on the eternal list with arc rival Rabotnicki.

The games started Friday morning as Rabotnicki Skopje faced last year Cup champion Karpos Sokoli in the quarterfinals. The young Karpos Sokoli squad did not have a chance with, by that moment unbeaten Rabotnicki team. Marin Dokuzovski's squad performed a 103-49 blowout that was well expected. American international Marcus Ginyard led his team to victory with 21 points and 7 rebounds, while Andrej Atanasov was the first name in Sokoli's team with 15 points and 3 rebonds.
In the second game of the day this season's wonder Blokotehna also had a well-performed shooting day as the team from Gevgelija managed to sink Ohrid-AV with 110-88. Seven Blokotehna players had double digit points as the first name in the sheet was Dwayne Benjamin with 18 points and 4 assists. Ohrid AV's side was led by Martin Junakovic's amazing performance of 37 points and 3 rebounds.
MZT Skopje and Kumanovo joined Rabotnicki and Blokotehna in the semifinals as the team from Skopje managed to grab an easy 115-68 victory against Feni Industries, while as the biggest surprise in the first day of the weekend Kumanovo managed to seal a 85-65 victory against Gostivar. Zeljko Lukajic's side shot 16/26 behind the arc and left the home town team no chance. Jordon Crawford was hot that night scoring 24 points and 5 assists for MZT Skopje, while Danny Lawhorn scored 23 points for Feni Industies. Everyone expected an equal game as Kumanovo and Gostivar clashed swords, but Kumanovo's dominance on the board (43-27) put the game to another path. Nikola Karakolev was the first name in the winning side with 17 points and 5 rebounds, while Jure Segaric had 17 points and 4 assists for Gostivar.

The semifinal clashes started with Rabotnicki's win over Kumanovo by 77-68. The Skopje side controlled the game from start to finish and seized an expected victory, but the biggest trouble for the white and reds was the injury of Marcus Ginyard who missed the second half. In his absence Kiril Nikolovski took the scoring effort as the Macedonian national member grabbed a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Aleksandar Sterjov was the first name in Kumanovo's sheet with 12 points and 8 rebounds.
The second day of the Cup finished with MZT Skopje's 89-78 victory over Blokotehna. The Gevgelija side already won two clashes against MZT Skopje this seasons and Marjan Ilievski's team had the psychological advantage before the game. Blokotehna started hot and grabbed an early 29-19 lead, but MZT Skopje managed to overcome their struggles and took over the lead by the end of the first half 45-43. After only scoring 2 points in the first half, Jordon Crawford came out of the locker room hot. The American led his team with 30 points in the second half and led his team to another Cup final. He finished the game as the first scorer of Skopje's side with 32 points, while Danilo Mijatovic led Blokotehna with 21 points and 8 rebounds against his former team.

Everything was set for the "Macedonian el clasico" as Rabotnicki and MZT Skopje reminded of the old days with a trophy clash. The attendance in "Jasmin" did not disappoint as in a packed arena with both sets of fans the arc rivals faced in an important game. MZT Skopje controlled the game at the beginning of the match, while Dimitar Mirakovski kept his team in the game with 14 first half points. Rabotnicki's two three pointers at the start of the second half gave them their second lead of the game, but Damjan Stojanovski and Darko Sokolov answered with the same measure on the other side for a 45-43 lead by the end of the third quarter. Without Ginyard Rabotnicki was not the same team on the court. The attacks weren't "by the notes", but MZT Skopje kept his opponent in the game with faults in the critical part of the game. However, by the end of the game MZT Skopje grabbed a 10-1 series and settled for their ninth Cup trophy after a 76-67 win.
Bojan Trajkovski led MZT Skopje with 18 points and 8 rebounds, while well-experienced Dimitar Mirakovski scored 24 points for Rabotnicki.

The MVP award went to the hands of MZT Skopje's captain Damjan Stojanovski who finished the final with 15 points and 10 rebounds. With this victory MZT Skopje equalized on the eternal list with Rabotnicki for the first place with nine trophies each.
