Australia claimed a comfortable win over Spain in the opening game at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Five players scored in double digits for the Boomers. Jock Landale (211-C-1995, college: SMC) finished with 20 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Australia set the tone in the first period. They unloaded 31 points in the opening ten minutes to open a double-digit lead. Spain managed to pull within five points in the second stanza but Australia restored a 49-42 advantage at the half. The Boomers maintained the lead throughout the third quarter. They established a 69-60 buffer heading into the fourth frame. Sergio Llull (190-G-1987) hit back-to-back three-pointers to put Spain within five points 68-73. But Patty Mills (186-PG-1988, college: SMC) and Jock Landale responded with quick four points and then McVeigh drained a three-pointer to make it 82-71 for Australia as they never looked back en route to the win. Patty Mills scored 19 points, while Josh Giddey (203-G-2002) added 17 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists for the Boomers. Santiago Aldama (211-F/C-2001, college: Loyola, MD) answered with game-high 27 points for Spain. Sergio Llull had 17 points in the loss. |
