Local Salamanca team this time did not give up. But 11-0 run of defending champions in just 3 minutes, put them ahead of Perfumerias Avenue and Jose Ignacio Hernandez immediately asked for time out. Michelle Snow (196-C-80, agency: LBM Management, college: Tennessee) tried her best. But that was her, who Ros Casares players tried to stop most. It allowed them to end first quarter with confident lead 22-10. It's important to notice that in first 12 minutes only Gunta Basko (181-F-80, college: Siena) and Snow managed to score points for Perfumerias. In the following minutes local team out their play back. They started to grab more rebounds than their opponents. But Brazilian center Erika De Souza (197-C-82) managed to find the way under Salamanca team basket. However she injured her elbow and ended the evening playing just 13 minutes. Perfumerias felt they had again the chance and speed up their game. The attacks were lead by Anke De Mondt (180-F/G-79) and Petra Stampalija (190-C-80). Candice Wiggins (180-G-87, college: Stanford) of Ros Casares tried to stop local teams' attacks, but this time Le'Coe Willingham (183-C-81, college: Auburn) joined Stampalija and they shrunk the defending champion lead at the half time to 39-28. Snow and her teammates started the third period with very aggressive game closing the gap even more (32-39). But Ros Casares response was very quick and they got 7-0 run increasing the lead back to 14 points. But Salamanca did not give up and especially their tough defense caused lots of problems for Ros Casares center Delisha Milton-Jones (186-F-74, college: Florida). She was sent on the bench with four fouls. Losing two starting five players and Anna Montanana (186-F-80, college: George Washington) on fouls risk (three fouls so far), Ros Casares seem to be lost. That was what home team was waiting for and they shrunk again the lead to 41-49 in 28th minute. That was time when international guard Laia Palau (178-G/F-79) step in and first had important three-pointer followed with free throws and offensive rebounds. Then another foul made by Milton and Salamanca team came close to 6 points (55-61) in 36th minute. That was not the end and Maria Rovira (170-G-75) put Perfumerias even closer to 60-63 two minutes before the end of the game. Very nervous game in last minutes when Snow and Amaya Valdemoro (184-F/G-76) exchanged the shots. Eventually Ros Casares managed to keep the lead and could celebrate championship title with 70-66 win. Ros Casares won Cup of Reina again - Mar 9, 2009 Surprising final in Cup of Reina this year. Salamanca fans couldn't watch their team in the final because EBE-Promociones Ibiza destroyed them in semifinal. But powerful Ros Casares was too much for island team. In spite of the big difference the score was tied during most part of game. Ibiza began teh game with Sancho Lyttle as main character, what's more, she was the MVP of tournament finally. But last quarter the defense of Ros Casares and the excellent performances of Erika de Souza and Anna Anna Montanana (186-F-80, college: George Washington) were decisive. Once again Salamanca showed that is the city of women spanish basketball. Perfumerias will have another chance in front of his people in next Euroleague Final Four. |
