South African players are making strides in international basketball careers

Basketball in South Africa, unlike sports like rugby, soccer and cricket, has been a niche sport for decades. However, in the last few years, South African players have increasingly been stepping onto the international stage. With notable transfers and verifiable performance statistics, South Africans have been making it in international leagues, and especially in European basketball.

According to data from FIBA and RealGM, international player migration has gone up since 2021. And with that, European basketball accounts for the highest number of foreign professionals outside the NBA. Within this increasingly global ecosystem, South African players, once rarely represented, are now appearing in competitive European leagues such as Spain's Primera Federacion and Germany's Pro B.

As European basketball becomes more commercialized, online gambling brands have become more embedded in its ecosystem. Talk about financial sponsorships and driving fan engagement towards European basketball leagues. Collaboration with the best online casinos helps increase international promotion across digital channels due to the huge followership. And for South African athletes, this environment creates stronger pathways to recognition and career advancement abroad.

South African talent in European basketball

While professional basketball in South Africa is still in its growth phase, there are players who are already doing well overseas. This already signals an emerging trend of international representations.

Samkelo Cele breaking ground in Spain

One of the hottest exports to Europe from South Africa is Samkelo Cele. Before signing for Real Valladolid Baloncesto in Spain's Primera Federacion in 2025, Cele was hitting it big with the South African team Cape Town Tigers of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). In the 2022-23 season, he helped the Tigers get to the playoffs, and in the 2023-24 season, he helped them to 4th place.

Recently, Samkelo signed with the defending BAL champions Petro de Luanda. This he is doing with the hopes that he will be able to get an NBA chance after playing the NBA Summer League with the Knicks in 2024.

Cele joined the Spanish club Real Valladolid in March 2025. His arrival was notable, not just for his talent but also for his background and trajectory. Valladolid's coaching staff has highlighted his physicality, defensive intensity and scoring versatility as the key reasons for his recruitment. These traits helped him gain acceptance to the club.

Since joining Real Valladolid, Cele has made an immediate impact. In his debut match, a short while after signing, Cele contributed 7 points in just 10 minutes. This showcased his ability to adapt quickly, despite traveling for long and having minimal practice time. In the 2024-25 Primera Federacion season, Cele ranked among his team leaders in advanced metrics such as player efficiency rating (PER).

So far, raw scoring numbers in Spain do not fully reflect his talent due to limited minutes and team roles. However, in per-40-minute estimates, he is placed at an impressive scoring rate. In fact, among the 2024-25 Spanish Primera FEB leaders, he led in points among the SF, having an average of 24.4.

Other notable South Africans in European leagues beyond Spain

Even though Samkelo is the biggest talk of the town, there are other players who have dared to dream big. Other players in other European programs include:

• David Craig: a 7-foot center from Johannesburg playing in the German Pro B league. This is a competitive environment where many players get to refine their skills and draw attention to bigger clubs.
• Alex Tamayo: Played for the Spanish Segunda Division team.
• Nino Dim: A forward listed for South Africa in RealGM's database. He has competed in the Lithuanian LKL (one of Europe's historically strong leagues).
• Sphelele Dlamini: Even though he is still seeking European club opportunities, he has some prior European club experience. In the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, he played for Handi Basketball Club Gravelines in the French second league (NM2)

Even though these roles have not been making headlines, you can clearly see that South Africa is out there for the world to experience. Many South African talents have also been increasing their international profiles through the Basketball Africa League (BAL). The league (a partnership between FIBA and NBA) broadcasts in more than 215 countries and territories, meaning that European league scouts are finding precious talent.

Development over spotlight

For many South African players, Germany and Eastern Europe have emerged as strategic development hubs rather than headline destinations. You see, in Spain and France, competition for roster spots is intense and often favors established American imports. However, Leagues like Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic and the Balkans are more centered around player development. This environment has particularly proved valuable for SA athletes transitioning from BAL or university systems and joining the European professional structure.

Take, for example, Germany's lower professional tiers, especially ProA and ProB. These leagues are considered some of Europe's most reliable stepping stones to pro leagues. In fact, registration data by Eurobasket and FIBA Europe reveal that a good chunk of ProB rosters feature non-German players.

The FIBA International Basketball Migration Report for 2023-24 revealed that Germany and Italy hosted the highest number of foreign players worldwide outside the NBA. This clearly reflects how welcoming these markets are to global talent. For South Africans, even though some of the leagues from these places may lack global media attention, they provide something more critical. These leagues offer a credible pathway upwards within Europe's basketball ecosystems.
