Despite being one of the biggest sports in the USA, basketball has thus far failed to have the same impact in the UK. It has lived in the shadow of football, rugby, and cricket for decades, but it could be time for it to break through and enjoy a surge in interest.

Super League Basketball is the recently rebranded top-tier league in the country, and this has the potential to become huge with younger generations if it's marketed correctly. The online entertainment industry could offer various ways to boost the league.

Casino and Mobile Markets Could Promote Basketball Through Official Games

One of the best ways to get basketball in front of a much wider audience could be to tap into the power of the online casino industry, which is huge in the UK. The rise of sports-themed games suggests that players like to try online casino games now that are related to real-world activities. These include titles like Red Zone Blitz, World Darts Championship, and Stadium Megaways. An official game based on Super League Basketball could help to get the competition in front of this large iGaming audience.

Mobile apps could also hold the key to raising awareness of Britain's basketball league. NBA 2K26 MyTEAM and Dunk City Dynasty are the two most popular in the country according to number of downloads, but there are other apps like Basketball Rivals: Sports Game and Basketball Stars: Multiplayer that have enjoyed a lot of interest as well. People clearly like to play games on their smartphone related to the sport, so it could be a good opportunity for Super League Basketball to release an official title of its own as part of its promotion.

Netflix and Other Streaming Services Could Help

The streaming market could be a great way to get British basketball in front of a broader audience as well. Currently, people who want to watch the matches have to download the DAZN app. However, this is not as well-known as the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. If one of these services picked up the rights to the league, it would instantly open it up to millions of people who may not have had the chance to discover it before.

If there were more documentaries that took viewers behind the scenes of the sport in the country, it would be beneficial as well. Sports docuseries have blown up in popularity in recent times, and The Last Dance is up there with the best titles on Netflix. That shows how there is an interest in basketball content among users in the UK. F1: Drive to Survive is another example of a documentary that completely revitalised a sport as well. Formula One has attracted new viewers in the UK, with many people discovering it for the first time through the Netflix series.

British basketball has a chance of becoming more visible alongside the other main sports in the UK in the next few years, but it will need the help of the entertainment industry if it is to do so. Hopefully, it can replicate the success of Formula One in the digital era.
