Athlete Celje wins its second WABA title, Annamaria Prezelj MVP - Mar 20, 2017
Slovenian side Athlete Celje won their second WABA title by defeatin Beroe of Stara Zagora 61-57 in the 2017 Finals in Podgorica. Annamaria Prezelj (177-SG-97) scored 15 points and was named 2017 WABA Final-Four MVP, Shante Evans (184-F/C-91, college: Hofstra) finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds, Larisa Ocvirk (184-SF-97) collected 12 points and 17 rebounds and Iva Slonjsak (183-SG-97) posted 10 points. Beroe led only once in the game and that came on an opening basket by Stefka Miteva (191-C-89). Celje then went on a decisive 16-0 run and its defense held Beroe scoreless for a 7:19 span. Beroe twice cut the deficit to seven points, the last time at 16-23 midway through the second quarter. At that point, Larisa Ocvirk sank a 3-pointer to ignite a 13-4 run and Celje 36-21 at the halftime break. Slovenian team opened the second half with an 8-2 run for the largest advantage of the game, 44-23. After trailing 30-50 late in the third quarter, Beroe went on a 17-3 run to cut the deficit to 47-53 with three minutes remaining. Larisa Ocvirk hit her second 3-pointer of the game and then Shante Evans made five straight free throws that gave Celje a 61-54 lead with 13 seconds left. Celje outrebounded Beroe 52-35, picking nup 22 offensive boards. Bulgarian team was led by regular season MVP Monique Reid (185-PF-90, college: Louisville) with 19 points and Milena Tomova (187-F/C-82, college: FIU) added 10 points.
