There was no surprise in Sao Paolo where 6th ranked Rio Claro (3-4) was defeated by third ranked Pinheiros (6-1) 81-71. Rio Claro was ahead by 2 points at the halftime before a 48-36 second half run of Pinheiros. It was an exceptional evening for American guard Desmond Holloway (191-90, college: Co.Carolina) who led the winners and scored 22 points and 8 rebounds. His fellow American import guard Cordero Bennett (188-88) accounted for 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for the winning side. Five Pinheiros players scored in double figures. Center Daniel Castellar (203-83) came up with 20 points and 6 rebounds (on 10-of-11 shooting from the field) and the former international point guard George Yeye Torres (188-91) added 14 points and 6 assists respectively for Rio Claro in the defeat. Rio Claro's coach Dede Barbosa rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Pinheiros. They moved-up to second place. Rio Claro at the other side keeps the sixth position with four games lost. Pinheiros' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Sao Paolo Paulistano.
