Regular Season Round 23: Sendai 89ers - Hamamatsu P. 75-64

Round 23 in BJ League means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Sendai where host Sendai 89ers (16-5) beat league's leader Hamamatsu Phoenix (15-4) 75-64 on Saturday evening. It ended at the same time the 11-game winning streak of Hamamatsu Phoenix. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The hosts trailed by 7 points at the halftime before their 47-29 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Sendai 89ers made 17-of-21 free shots (81.0 percent) during the game. The game was dominated by American players. The best player for the winners was guard Wendell White (198-84, college: UNLV) who had a double-double by scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds. Power forward Jamal Boykin (203-87, college: California) chipped in 19 points and 5 rebounds. Four Sendai 89ers players scored in double figures. Guard Terrance Woodbury (201-87, college: Georgia, agency: Haylett Sports) produced 16 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists and guard Kejuan Johnson (193-85, college: Long Beach St., agency: Inception Sports) added 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for the guests. Hamamatsu Phoenix's coach rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Sendai 89ers maintains first place with 16-5 record. Hamamatsu Phoenix at the other side dropped to the second position with four games lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Kyoto Hannar.. Hamamatsu Phoenix will have a break next week, which should allow them to rest and make it back to the top of the standings. Sendai 89ers will try to continue on its current victory against second ranked Hamamatsu Phoenix in Mikawa.
