Regular Season Round 36: Sendai 89ers - Toyama Grouses 87-96

Top ranked Sendai 89ers (23-9) recorded its ninth loss at the home court. Hosts were defeated by second ranked Toyama Grouses (21-9) 96-87. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in the league. It looked good early as Sendai 89ers took a 4-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then Toyama Grouses had a 27-13 second period charge getting the lead and Sendai 89ers were not able to take back game control losing it eventually 87-96. Toyama Grouses made 25-of-31 charity shots (80.6 percent) during the game, while Sendai 89ers only scored four points from the stripe. Sendai 89ers were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. The game was also dominated by American players. It was a good game for forward Sam Willard (205-88, college: Pacific) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 13 rebounds. Guard Jermaine Dixon (191-87, college: Pittsburgh, agency: HMS) contributed with 24 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Guard Wendell White (198-84, college: UNLV) replied with a double-double by scoring 24 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists and power forward Jamal Boykin (203-87, college: California) added 21 points and 9 rebounds in the effort for Sendai 89ers. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Sendai 89ers' coach Shuto Kawachi rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Toyama Grouses maintains second position with 21-9 record having 2 victories less than leader Kyoto Hannar. Sendai 89ers at the other side still keep top place with nine games lost. They share the position with Okinawa GK and Shimane SM. Toyama Grouses will play against Fukushima (#5) at home in the next round. Sendai 89ers will play against Tokyo Cinq R. (#12) and hope to get back on the winning track.
