Regular Season Round 12: St.John M.R. - Z*Kebs de Laval 89-91

Date: December 11, 2011
The Saint John Mill Rats went down in yet another home-court heartbreaker, losing to the Quebec Kebs 91-89 in National Basketball League of Canada action at Harbour Station Sunday afternoon in front of 1,853 fans. With the score 89-86, Mill Rats forward Steve DeLuca's three-point attempt rattled in out of the rim with just seconds left on the clock. With the hometown squad in desperation mode, Kebs guard Ralphy Holmes (6'4'-G-79, college: CS Fullerton) was fouled and made good on his ensuing free throws. A late three from Saint John's Greg Plummer turned out to be too little too late. Going into the fourth quarter down 74-63, the Mill Rats stormed back in the dying minutes of the final period to knot the game 81-81, thanks to the hot hand of PJ Young who poured in 10 points in the quarter. With Saint John down by just one, 87-86, Mill Rats centre Antoine Tisby (6'9'-F-83, college: S.Carolina) had his pass intercepted. Kebs forward Yannick Anzuluni got fouled on the ensuing play and was perfect on the charity stripe. From there the visitors didn't look back. With the loss the Mill Rats drop to .500 with a record of 6-6, while the Kebs improve to 9-5. For Young, who had his best game of the year, he was frustrated his efforts didn't translate into a win. 'It's tough to take, we didn't have a great start,' said Young. 'We came out a bit slow. But we have some new players and we're still trying to gel so we just have to learn to be more focused all the time.' The Mill Rats once again got off to a slow start and had to dig themselves out of a hole. Newcomer Kevin Francis (6'8'-F-84, agency: SportsList Inc., college: Vincennes Univ.) shouldered most of the scoring load pouring in 11 points in the first quarter. He ended up with a game-high 19 points, including two put-back slams. Holmes also had 19 points to lead Quebec. The Port City squad struggled early on to find a rhythm and contain a quick and athletic Quebec squad. The Mill Rats ended the first quarter trailing 30-21. Sparked by timely threes from Plummer and Anthony Anderson, the Mill Rats erased a double-digit deficit in the second quarter and took a 40-38 lead with four minutes left in the second. From there the score went back and forth with the game knotted 43-43 at the half. But the visitors took advantage of a flat Saint John squad in the third and went on a 7-0 run to start the period. A three from Holmes gave the visitors an 11-point lead at the midpoint of the quarter, which they maintained, ending the stanza with a 74-63 lead. Like Young, Mill Rats head coach Jaren Jackson attributed the loss to growing pains. With so much new talent he said the team needs a little time to go on a run. But he was impressed by his squad's secondary scoring. 'It's a tough loss,' said Jackson. 'I wish we would have won it for Modibo (Diarra) and the guys off the bench. They played really hard at both ends of the floor.' The Mill Rats will play their next game against the Moncton Miracles (0-10) at the Moncton Coliseum on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Courtesy of https://telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com
