Date: January 30, 2016
Another interesting game was again a derby between two teams from Doha: Al Rayyan (#2) and Al Arabi (#8). Al Rayyan (14-1) smashed visiting Al Arabi (3-12) by 40 points 118-78. The game was mostly controlled by Al Rayyan. Al Arabi was better in fourth quarter 32-30. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Al Rayyan dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Al Arabi's 40. They shot the lights out from three nailing 17 long-distance shots on high 60.7 percentage. Al Rayyan players were unselfish on offense dishing 24 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Al Arabi's players. American point guard Dominic James (180-86, college: Marquette) notched 23 points, 8 assists and 4 steals to lead the effort and Mohamed Abdelaziz supported him with 18 points and 7 assists. Five Al Rayyan players scored in double figures. Al Rayyan's coach Stergios Koufos felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Even a double-double of 25 points and 14 rebounds by American center Todd O'Brien (211-89, college: UAB) did not help to save the game for Al Arabi. His fellow American import point guard Temi Soyebo (183-84, college: NC-Wilmington) added 32 points and 5 assists. Al Rayyan have an impressive seven-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains second position with 14-1 record behind leader Al Sadd. Al Arabi at the other side keeps the eighth place with 12 games lost. They share the position with Qatar. Al Rayyan will play against Al Khor (#5) on the road in the next round. Al Arabi's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Doha Al Ahli.
