There was a surprise result when ninth rankedGernika (6-6) crushed higher ranked Gran Canaria (7-5) in Las Palmas 85-56 on Saturday. Gernika dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Gran Canaria 's 26. They outrebounded Gran Canaria 37-22 including a 24-12 advantage in defensive rebounds. Gernika looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The winners were led by center Awa Thiam (192-2006, college: Pima CC) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 16 points and 12 rebounds and Dutch forward Laura Westerik (176-1998) supported her with 18 points. Five Gernika players scored in double figures. Gernika's coach Lucas Fernandez felt very confident using 10 players and allowed the starting five to rest. Even 16 points and 7 rebounds by American center Kai James (196-1995, college: FSU) did not help to save the game for Gran Canaria . American-Dominican guard Dominique Toussaint (175-1998, college: Virginia) added 12 points. Gernika moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Estudiantes. Loser Gran Canaria keeps the fifth position with five games lost. They share it with Jairis and Joventut.
