WNBA
Regular Season Round 1: S.Antonio SS - Indiana F. 64-79
Date: May 24, 2013
The defending WNBA champion Indiana Fever spotted the San Antonio Silver Stars an early 10-0 lead in the season opener for both teams, but the Fever outscored the home team 45-29 in the second half to roll to a 79-64 victory. Indiana got 19 points from Tamika Catchings and Shavonte Zellous, and 18 from Katie Douglas as Indiana won its opener with just nine active players. Ironically, it was with just nine active players that the Fever also upset Minnesota last October, in Games 3 and 4 of the WNBA Finals, for the league title. The veteran Fever methodically climbed back into the game, trailing 19-14 at the end of the first quarter and taking its first lead just before halftime. The Fever outscored the Silver Stars 46-19 inside the lane, buoyed by the inside presence of Erlana Larkins who contributed eight points and a regular-season career-high 12 rebounds. After shooting 5-of-16 in the opening quarter, Indiana responded to shoot 55 percent (27-of-49) the rest of the game. The Fever led by as many as 20 points, 75-55, in the final moments. San Antonio's Shenise Johnson came off the bench to pace the Silver Stars with 14 points. Shameka Christon added 10 while Danielle Robinson had four points and nine assists.
