Regular Season Round 19: Phoenix M. - S.Antonio SS 80-88

Date: July 10, 2013
The Mercury's opponent Wednesday, the San Antonio Silver Stars, were without two of their best players, guard Becky Hammon and forward Sophia Young — both out for the year with knee injuries. The Mercury were without rookie Brittney Griner, out with a sprained left knee. But most of all, they played without verve in an 88-80 loss at their annual Camp Day matinee in front of 8,707 at US Airways Center. The Mercury, now 8-6 after two straight losses, didn't make it difficult for San Antonio, which shot 53 percent from the field and scored half of its points in the paint. “They pretty much beat us today, easy,” guard Diana Taurasi said. “I don't think there was defense inside, outside, on the side, on the top, on the bottom. We didn’t do anything. “We have to find a way to step up in different ways. And I think today, no one did. No one really did much to help the cause.” Candice Dupree led the Mercury with 22 points. Taurasi had 20 points and five assists, but she also had six turnovers and fouled out with 2:39 left in the game while the Mercury were down 83-75. Mercury coach Corey Gaines said he isn't sure when Griner, who was ruled out for Wednesday's game after she practiced on Tuesday, will be able to play again. Even without Griner, the Mercury were expected to take care of San Antonio (4-8). The Silver Stars, who have just nine players available, were coming off a rough stretch. They were on a three-game losing streak, had lost seven of its previous eight games and were just 1-5 on the road. The 88 points the Silver Stars scored Wednesday is a season-high; they didn't score more than 78 in their previous four games. The Mercury didn't have any defensive presence inside as the Silver Stars, who had six players score in double figures, had their way to score on layups, whether it was the forwards cutting to the lane or the guards driving in. Gaines said the defense on San Antonio's pick-and-roll offense wasn't executed well and the defense down in the post wasn't effective enough. The Mercury still shot well, 49.1 percent for the game, and was still in the contest in the fourth quarter. But after Penny Taylor tied the game at 74 with 4:26 left, the Spurs went on a 10-3 run through the next 2:26 to pull away. Dupree said the Mercury's play was “just bad” all around and there was no flow on offense. “It just felt like we were at the wrong place at the wrong time on the court,” she said. “We couldn't get any stops. We need stops to get out and run. I think we beat ourselves in this game. San Antonio didn't do anything special offensively or defensively. We just beat ourselves.” Courtesy of: azcentral.com
