Outlook:
“[Claflin] has a great player. 6’7. by the name of Calvin Witherspoon. and he can do it.” - Elizabeth City State University Head Coach Shawn Walker before facing Claflin University
Calvin Witherspoon has the pro size, pro ability, and pro attitude to be a valuable addition to any NBA franchise. Although having played any of four positions during his highly decorated college career, Witherspoon is a “combo-forward” by trade. He not only possesses the quickness, versatility, and range allowing him to successfully run the break, hit the 3-pointer, and defend perimeter players, but also maintains the size and strength at 6’7-260 lb. to get great position under the basket, to bang down low, and to defend post players. His statistics clearly demonstrate this versatility, and the ability to dominate top-tier competition. For example, against NCAA Division I-A South Carolina State, Witherspoon scored 26 points, pulled down 7 rebounds, and dished out 2 assists. The South Carolina Heat recognized his talent and picked him early in the 2005 World Basketball Association draft ahead of countless NCAA Division I-A starters including Ryan Gomes (Providence, Boston Celtics). Aside from his physical gifts, Witherspoon also possesses the requisite intelligence and maturity levels to adapt to life as a professional; at only age 23, he was appointed as assistant coach at Claflin.
