The BNE Oilers Are In The Playoffs! -by David Magana
Last Saturday night, the Belmopan Oilers (3-5) went into the Andres Campus Stadium and ruined the hopes of the Corozal Running Rebels (1-7) of qualifying into the playoffs.

From the get, the Oilers made sure that everyone knew they meant business; immediately making a dent on the score board and winning the first quarter by a score of 14-13. In the second quarter, it was a free for all, as the top score went back and forth from Oilers to Rebels. Nevertheless, at the end of this quarter, the Oilers were still the ones at the forefront with six points: 35-29. In the third quarter, the Oilers kept up the pace but the Rebels didn't - this cost them the game. They ended 55-41. Seeing their hopes to qualify into the playoffs vanishing, the Rebels made a final effort in the last quarter to make a come back but were short by 7 points, losing the game by a heart breaking 77-70. Failing for yet another year, the Rebels were left in the basement with their dreams of winning a championship vanishing like a puff smoke in the air. Maybe next year Rebel fans. As for the Oilers, they will face the mighty Bulldogs (7-1) in the playoffs.

For the winning team, Bart Sanchez (193-G/F) ended the game with 19 points, Christian Rodriguez (188-G/F) with 18 points and Aubrey Lopez (188-G) with 10 points and 12 rebounds. In a losing effort it was Rupert Brown (170-G) ended with 25 points, Eric Cheers (198-G/F-75, college: Columbia Union) with 16 points, 10 rebounds and Jason Daly (183-G) with 12 points.

Advantage Butte makes plans, looks back -by Eurobasket News
An event organized by folks with big plans as a Butte draw will launch its attempt in August, and directors of a tournament held recently in Butte want to come back again. The items headlined discussions at the June meeting of Advantage Butte held Tuesday at Perkins Restaurant.

Gina Evans of the Highland Cycling Club presented an outline for the Butte 100 mountain bike event scheduled for Aug. 4. The race will go from behind Montana Tech out to the Sheepshead/Bernice area and back. Evans said 100 to 150 cyclists from all over the West are expected to enter.

We're trying to get into the western United States part (of the major cycling scene), she said.

Evans said sponsorship space on jerseys and for mile markers are being sold and hopes are to be able to draw top contestants with the lure of prize money. She said such is common in other large events.

Hoot Gibson of the Silver Bow Amateur Wrestling Association reported back to the committee that last week's AAU Grand Nationals tournament held in the Butte Civic Center was a community success. The entries draw was more than 400 the first day of the three-day meet, 560 the second and 680 the third, Gibson said. He added that compliments about Butte were told for him to forward, which he did to the committee, and included lodging, meals, media coverage and overall town hospitality.

The people liked us, he said. They want us in on the rotation. The annual tourney site rotates through different locations. This year's was the first for Butte to serve as host.

Also, Terri O'Herron of the Butte Daredevils See ADVANTAGE, Page B4 Continental Basketball Association team reminded that the kids' shooters clinic is to be held July 18-20 at the Maroon Activities Center and the next season is to tip off on Nov. 16. She said the club has been getting good response on preseason ticket and sponsorship sales, it is accepting requests for charitable groups to take part in the 50/50 contests held at each home game and that the Daredevils are offering another way for non-profits to raise funds.

She said groups may sell advance game tickets and keep a percentage of the receipts for their charities. She can be reached at 792-2859 for details.

Butte Tarpons Swim Team spokesman Dale Sessions said chances are dimming for the club to hold its summer invitational meet. He said it seems unlikely the Stodden Park outdoor pool will be ready for use by the scheduled date next month. The pool did not open last year and is undergoing major repairs. It would be the second year in a row that the Tarpons have had to give up their home summer meet.

However, the group to win out over Missoula to serve as host of the state longcourse meet next Feb. 29-March 2, Sessions said. The meet will be held at the Butte YMCA pool. The Butte indoor pool will also be the site of a Tarpons invitational Nov. 2-4. Sessions said the pool is being called the best in the state by persons associated with other Montana clubs who have had the opportunity to race in it.

He added that the team has launched its fundraiser to for the coming year's worth of expenses.

The Paul Clark McDonald Family Place benefit golf tournament is scheduled for Aug. 19 at Fairmont Hot Springs. The 9 a.m. shotgun start features a four-person team scramble, lunchand several prizes. Jeff Gorman of the Butte McDonald's told the Advantage Butte group the tournament raised $5,000 for the house last year. He is soliciting entries and donations for this year's meet and can be reached at 490-8319.

Ned Ellingwood, representing Butte youth baseball, said the Little League regular season is winding down and that all-star teams have been picked. He said city tournament play will begin at the end of the month.

Ellingwood added that two baseball tournaments were held together last weekend at Copper Mountan Youth Sports Complex the Father's Day Classic, in which 15 major boys' teams competed, and the Mark Kovnesky tourney for junior teams, which drew eight squads. This is Butte's first year participating in Senior Little League, which took the place of its membership in Babe Ruth Baseball Leagues.

Advantage Butte vice president Ron Davis gave a rundown of events coming to Butte next school year with which the group will be associated Western C volleyball and invitational swim meet in November; District 11/12-C and Western C Divisional boys' and girls' basketball tournaments in the MAC, a Class B divisional girls' basketball tournament in the MAC, and the state Class C boys' basketball tournament at the Civic Center, all in February; the state Class B girls' basketball tournament at the Civic Center, Frontier Conference men's and women's basketball tournament in the MAC and the state longcourse swim meet at the YMCA, all in March; and the state Class A girls' softball tournament at Copper Mountain in May.

He said Advantage Butte has committed $18,500 toward the expenses of holding the events and, so, the membership drive is now in gear. Full memberships cost $1,000, renewals are $500 and associate memberships can be gained for $250, said Ray Ueland, Advantage Butte president.

Butte Chamber of Commerce Director Marko Lucich emphasized, too, that more persons need to be trained for scorer's table duties at basketball tournaments to fill the needs as events land in Butte. Holding training sessions or clinic for anyone interested was talked.

The next Advantage Butte meeting will be held in August.

Grizz fill out coaching staff -by Eurobasket News
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Memphis Grizzlies coach Marc Iavaroni filled out his staff Friday by announcing the hiring of former NBA head coach Johnny Davis , veteran NBA assistant coach Gordon Chiesa and David Joerger from the NBADL.

"They bring a diversely successful set of experience, skills and teamwork that will form the backbone of our efforts to bring out the best in our players throughout the season and playoffs," Iavaroni said in a statement.

Since this is Iavaroni's first head coaching job, he tapped experience in Davis. He was head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers in 1996-97 and the Orlando Magic from 2003 to 2005. Davis also was an assistant at Indiana last season and has coached in Atlanta, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland, New Jersey and Minnesota.

Chiesa joins Memphis from Seattle where he was an assistant this past season. He also has worked in New Jersey but spent most of his career, 16 years, with Utah helping the Jazz win two Western Conference titles during 14 straight playoff appearances.

This is the first NBA job for Joerger, 33, who won an NBA Developmental League title last season with the Dakota Wizards, an IBA title and three CBA titles.

Yi to be Drafted Tenth, Sun to Go 36th -by Arthur Volbert
Time for draft predictions. Of course everything could be changed by trades happening before the draft Thursday night even occurs, but it's time to put my drafting reputation on the line. I believe that Yi Jianlian (212-C/F-87) will be drafted 10th by the Sacramento Kings and that Sun Yue will be drafted 36th by the Golden State Warriors.

Yi wants to go to a California team and I believe that his wish will be accomodated. Boston could choose him at number 5, but I believe that they will either trade the pick or select someone who is more NBA-ready. GM Danny Ainge needs to win next year and Yi's impact will be down the road. Yi does not want to go to small-market teams such as Milwaukee, Minnesota and Charlotte, and has refused to conduct workouts, and I believe Chicago will either trade its pick or take someone more ready to produce next year.

So Yi will fall to Sacramento where he will be the young cornerstone of the franchise, a position that he desires.

I believe Sun will be picked 36th by Golden State. Don Nelson likes international players and especially likes creative types like Sun. Golden State will be in an outstanding position to benefit from Sun's marketing potential, given San Francisco's large Asian community which also enhances the city's ties to China.

From reports in the Dallas Morning News, Dallas is interested in Sun at pick 34. But my guess is that someone will fall to 34th who will be useful in helping Dallas contend for the title next year, while Sun's major contributions will be a year or two away. Dallas is the only team that appears to be talking up Sun's potential. The Morning News story said that Sun could even be a late first-round pick, something the reporter must have gotten from a source on the Mavericks. Nelson's son Donnie is President of Basketball Operations for Dallas and has had close ties with China. Wang Zhizhi played for Dallas his first two seasons in the NBA. But Dallas may be talking up Sun's potential because they hope another prospect will fall to them instead.

CEZ Nymburk among 54 teams in ULEB Cup 2007-08 -by Pavel Majerik
The most inclusive basketball tournament ever held in Europe has been unveiled just in time for the 50th anniversary season of continental competitions. The Union of European Basketball Leagues (ULEB) announced on Monday that the new ULEB Cup will have 54 teams in 25 countries during the 2007-08 season. The draw to divide the participants into nine regular season groups of six teams each will be held on Saturday, June 30 in Jesolo, Italy during the weekend of the first ULEB Summer League. The field of 54 teams includes representatives from 10 countries that did not play last season or have never played before in the competition. The incredible demand from leagues and clubs across Europe to be part of the ULEB Cup was not able to be met completely, not even with the inclusion of 54 teams. ULEB wishes to thank both the clubs and national leagues coming to the ULEB Cup next season, and in particular the federations who have understood the situation. ULEB also wants to apologize to the many others that showed a desire to join the competition but could not be included.
. The new ULEB Cup is not only more expansive than any similar tournament before it, but also loaded with winners, past and present. There are 10 current domestic league champions among the 54 teams, including ASK Riga of Latvia, which reappears on the European scene exactly half a century after it won the continent's very first title, at the end of the 1957-58 season. Another 10 teams of the 54 were finalists in their national competitions last season, while 19 more were semifinalists. All told, more than two-thirds of the ULEB Cup's participating teams for 2007-08 either won domestic leagues last season or came within a step of getting that chance. In addition to ASK Riga, there are two former European champions (Bosna of Bosnia-Herzegovina and DKV Joventut of Spain), three former ULEB Cup winners (Pamesa Valencia, Hapoel Jerusalem and Dynamo Moscow) as well as 10 other clubs that have previously raised continental trophies or reached a Euroleague Final Four. The presence of Akasvayu Girona of Spain, Azovmash Mariupol of Ukraine and Estudiantes of Spain means that all four semifinalists from the last FIBA EuroCup - including VidiVici Bologna, which goes to the Euroleague - have been included in ULEB competitions.
. Not only past and present winning traditions are served by the new ULEB Cup, but geography, too. A total of 11 national capital cities from Moscow to Madrid will have at least one team each in the 2007-08 edition of the competition. Six countries are completely new to the competition - Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Montenegro, Switzerland and Ukraine - while four others - Austria, Croatia, England and Portugal - were among the ones anxious to return after previous experiences in the ULEB Cup. It all adds up to an major effort to spread the news of a growing sport to all corners of Europe. An ambitious project without boundaries except the criteria of great basketball competitiveness is born: the 2007-08 ULEB Cup!

The Artland Dragons Quakenbrueck and EnBW Ludwigsburg are among those teams which got entrance, the same is for ALBA Berlin and the Deutsche Bank Skyliners. Both clubs received a Wild Card. Pavlovic on a dispute about the team that he will offer his services -by Kostas Papadopoulos
The national teams of Montenegro and Serbia are in a battle nowadays for the services of the Cleveland Cavalier's player Aleksandar Pavlovic (200-F-83). Serbia named the player in their preliminary squad for the forthcoming Eurobasket 2007 of Spain earlier this month, but this week Montenegro also included Aleksandar Pavlovic on the list of players that they had to submit to basketball's world governing body FIBA until July 7.
Aleksandar Pavlovic is on the list, but we know that putting his name on our list isn't enough for him to be a member of Montenegrin national team, said the General Secretary of the Basketball Association of Montenegro, Petar Popovic. "This is a list of players which our head coach, Dusko Vujosevic, would like to see in our national team. However, since Aleksandar Pavlovic hasn't still made his official decision for which country he'll play, we have a right to hope that he'll be a Montenegrin player, as well as our friends from Serbia hope that he'll be their player. It's his choice, but we are working on that issue and I hope we'll get him.
Aleksandar Pavlovic played for Serbia & Montenegro at the 2004 Olympics, but he was out of Zeljko Obradovic's Eurobasket 2005 squad and last season did not make himself available for duty at the FIBA World Championship. As Montenegro's basketball federation was officially recognised at last year's FIBA World Congress in Japan, the Montenegrins and Serbians are now competing as separate teams and both would like to have Aleksandar Pavlovic in their roster. Serbia, though, seems to have the inside track to the player:
Despite the fact that the player was born in Montenegro, his parents are Serbs and Aleksandar Pavlovic has stated in the past that he considers himself to be a Serbian as well.
Regarding the subject, Serbia's national team's coach, Zoran "Moka" Slavnic, said: "Dusko Vujosevic put Aleksandar Pavlovic on the list and he has a right to do so. However, I am not worried since I know Sasha's attitude and I know what his decision is as I have already spoken with his father".
Aleksandar Pavlovic played for Buducnost, Montenegro's biggest basketball team, before going to the NBA in 2003. There, he spent a year with the Utah Jazz and was traded to Cleveland the next season.
It should, finally, be mentioned that Montenegro will not compete in official competition until next year, but the federation had to submit a list of players to FIBA until July 7.

Two Latvian teams will participate in ULEB Cup -by Eurobasket News
ULEB Cup will have 54 teams in 25 countries during the 2007-08 season. Due to this Latvia got another spot in it. ASK Riga, being the winner of the National League will join BK Ventspils.
ASK Riga and BK Ventspils will represent Latvia in ULEB Cup next season. There are 11 current domestic league champions among the 54 teams, including our ASK Riga, which reappears on the European scene exactly half a century after it won the continent's very first title.

The criteria applied to the selection of the teams has taken into account both current and historical sporting success to assure the broadest and strongest possible competition. The national ranking is the basis of which the majority of teams have been selected, while wild card choices have been employed to recognize the historical and strategic importance of other teams.

Last year BK Ventspils was eliminated from 1/8 Finals. In two games the Latvian squad did not find any weapon against Jerusalem from Israel. Meanwhile, ASK Riga finished third in Group J of FIBA Eurocup. The team however survived in the first group round with 3-3 in Group F and had a ticket to another round.

ASK Riga and BK Ventspils are truly the favorites of the Latvian Championship. The latter had a great regular season, but lost in the Final to ASK Riga. Meanwhile ASK Riga had a thriller with Barons in the semifinals that gave them more confidence in the Final win.

NBL season awards -by Eurobasket News

American import Josh Pace (198-G/F-83, agency: Interperformances, college: Syracuse) was named the NBL regular season MVP. Nelson Giants guard was selected to All-Star Five last year, but this season he was better, much better. His average stats marked 22.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game. A quick guard with an impressive ability to penetrate and deliver inside was a big problem for all defences throughout the league this year. Pace worked hard on his shooting and became a bigger threat from behind the arc this season. Now he has one more thing to conquer this season as his Nelson Giants take on the Bay Hawks in the Final. Josh Pace averaged 28.5 points, 8.5 boards and 5.0 assists against the Bay Hawks in two winning efforts this season.
Another awards were given out as well. The Rookie of the Year title went to Charlie Piho (194-F-85) of the Auckland Stars. Harbour Heat's John Dorge was named the Best Coach. Veteran Link Abrams (198-F-73) became Kiwi MVP adding this award to his best rebounder title. He shared Kiwi MVP award with Paora Winitana (195-G-76) from the Bay Hawks.

Penney the focus for Breakers -by Eurobasket News
The New Zealand Breakers hope their two-year pursuit of Tall Blacks basketballer Kirk Penney (195-G-80, college: Wisconsin) will be resolved this week to temper the disappointment of missing out on fellow international Craig Bradshaw (208-F/C-83).
A 2.10m centre, Bradshaw confirmed he had signed with reigning Australian National Basketball League (ANBL) champions the Brisbane Bullets.
However, he is still trying his luck with the National Basketball Association (NBA) draft in the United States on Friday (NZT) and has as out clause should be picked up.
The Breakers had been confident of bringing Bradshaw, 23, home after he completed studies at Winthrop University in South Carolina but the Bullets won out, signing the 2007 world championship team member to a two-year deal.
"I've come from a winning programme and to now be part of a team like Brisbane, who have also had great success, was just an opportunity that I felt I couldn't let slip," Bradshaw said after spurning the Breakers' advances.
The Auckland-based club now hopes Penney does not opt to extend his career in Europe after coming off contract with German club Alba Berlin.
The shooting guard has been targeted by the struggling franchise over the past two seasons and the perennial recruitment drive has been even more intense leading into the 2007-08 campaign following the retirement of Aaron Olson.
Breakers head coach Andre Lemanis spoke to Penney last weekend in a bid to lure the two-time Olympian home.
"We're waiting to hear if Kirk's ready to come home, it's still a work in progress," Lemanis said.
"We've had an offer on the table for the last two years."
The pair met ahead of Penney joining a Tall Blacks camp on Sunday to prepare for a three-test homes series against Venezuela starting in Napier on July 20.
Lemanis conceded European options were appealing and the door to the NBA was also not necessarily closed to Penney so he was partially relying on lifestyle factors to encourage the 26-year-old to head home.
"Kirk's still in the prime of his basketball career but talking to him, quality of life is something he's aware off, that's what's attractive about coming back to New Zealand," he said.
Penney has carved a solid pro career since leaving the University of Wisconsin in 2002, becoming the second New Zealander to play in the NBA on short-term contracts with the Miami Heat and LA Clippers.
He has also served time in the NBA development league and on several leading clubs in Spain, Israel and Lithuania, before his most recent stint in Germany.
Penney last month gave a glimmer of hope to the Breakers, suggesting he was tiring of a nomadic existence.
"I've lived overseas for eight years and it would be nice to spend some time at home. I'm looking very seriously at it."
Meanwhile, the Breakers still have to fill their two roster spots for imported players and Bradshaw's rejection should spark a hunt for a big man to complement Australian veteran Tony Ronaldson.
A guard will also be a priority if Penney decided to stay abroad.

The Caguas Criollos defeated the San German Athletics 94-85 to remain the only team still unbeaten in Round Robin play. Over at, Guayama, the Brujos keep the Lions winless as they beat the Lions 89-86. The Lions are now on the verge of elimination as they cannot afford another loss in their remaining games if they wish to continue on to the semifinals. Ponce took the 1st quarter 22-18, and held a slim lead at the half 41-39. In the 3rd quarter the Brujos tied the game, and were able to hold on for the win in the 4th. For Guayama, Erick Rodriguez (190-G-79) scored 27 points shooting 5 out of 8 from 3 point range, followed by Rafael Perez (184-G-82) with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

In the final game of the night, the Arecibo Captains kept the Carolina Giants winless as they defeated the Giants 101-84. Arecibo took an early lead in the 1st quarter and never looked back. For Arecibo, Marcus Fizer (203-F-78, agency: Priority Sports, college: Iowa St.) scored 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds followed by David Cortes with 28 points. For Carolina, Angelo Reyes (205-F/C-81) scored 21 points with 10 rebounds followed by Israel Pizarro (191-G-83) with 18 points.

Finally, in related information from BSN, the Ponce Lions have indicated that they have signed Coach Manuel Cintron once again to take the reins of the team. The Lions are despereately in need of a strong reaction as they have yet to obtain a win in the ongoing series. Cintron who previously coached the Lions is slated to take over and should be in the sidelines when the Fajardo Cariduros visit the Lions tomorrow night. There are also some rumors that Ponce was leaning towards also replacing their import player, but confirmation has not yet been received from the BSN at the time of this report.

Pro League Starts In September -by Don Farrell
Brian Manning, commissioner of the National Professional Basketball League, confirmed in a press conference at the VIP Lounge at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo yesterday, that the inaugural semi-professional league is on schedule to begin on September 1, 2007 despite not receiving any definite confirmation of financial assistance, to start the event.

The 32-year-old son of Prime Minister Patrick Manning submitted a $9M proposal to government for funding the league which he indicated will be used to develop the sport in T&T.

The league will offer boundless opportunities for the development and advancement of our players, their skills and ambitions and also promote our local talent to universities and other professional leagues around the world, Manning said.

According to Manning, the multi-million dollar proposal has been approved by both the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (Sportt) and the National Basketball Federation of T&T which will allow him to access some $3M, to stave off operation costs, every year for the next three years.

The league will be targeting 10 teams from across T&T.

To allow for the smooth transition into the league, 10 teams have been identified based on their player base, their history for attracting supporters and their tradition of good basketball, Manning said.

Eight teams have already been listed - Straker Nets, Defence Force, Detour Shak Attack, Caledonia Clippers, Petro Jazz, Maloney Pacers, Royal Extra Lions, Marabella Raptors.

The other two teams will be sourced from Point Fortin and Tobago.

The league will offer employment to approximately 200 young men and in the future young women.

It will also institute a developmental programme at the under-18 and U-15 levels to prepare young players for scholarships and to be future professionals.

The proposed monthly salary for each franchise player is TT$3,500 and TT$3,000 for others.

Players will also be insured but of course teams will have to pay a registration fee which will be announced at a later date.

Each team will be allowed a coach, two assistant coaches, a physiotherapist and a manager. All positions will be paid.

Players will also be subjected to random drug testing.

Manning stated that his pro league was above board and is registered as a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).

Manning continues to refute claims of special treatment, claiming instead that being the PM's son has been a hindrance to him.

People are trying to make this about politics. I am a citizen of T&T and I feel have the right to do what I think is necessary to help solve the difficulties faced by players, explained Manning.

Venues to be used for the league are Maloney Indoor Sport Arena, Eastern Regional Indoor Sport Arena in Tacarigua, Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Chaguanas, South Regional Indoor Sport Arena in Pleasantville, San Fernando, Southwest Regional Indoor Sport Arena, Point Fortin, St Paul Street Sport Complex in Laventille, Jean Pierre Complex in Mucurapo and Mayaro Youth/Sport Indoor Facility.

When asked about his relationship with Nixon Dyall, he said, Nixon and I were partners but that relationship was dissolved because the original proposal did not meet the requirements of the NBFTT and the Sportt company.

So I went out on my own and meet with the two bodies and we devised a proposal which is satisfactory.

Manning said he has no plans of using the league to get a foot into politics.

I have been playing basketball from since the age of 12 and have been through every level of the game and I know what players need so my focus will always remain in improving basketball in T&T.

The NPBL board of directors also include Albert Lee Young (deputy commissioner), who was present at the conference, Racquel Pouchet, Stuart Richard Young, Kenneth Prescott and Vaughn Martin..............guardian

Deanna Jackon Resigns with Anda -by Eurobasket News
Deanna Jackson (188-F-79, college: UAB), the team's MVP last year who ended the season on a bad note with the Gourevitch incident, will continue in Ramat Hasharon next season.

Deanna Jackson (27, 6'2), who averaged 19.8 points (6th in league) and 10.0 rebounds (5th in league) per game last season, has resigned with Anda Ramat Hasharon for the upcoming season. She was picked to 'Safsal's 1st team and also named 1st team by the league coaches. Jackson joins Merav Dori, Vilipic & Shani Levi who signed with the team recently.

This will be Jackson's 3rd season in Israel after a succesful stint in Ramat Hen in 05/06. Last season Jackson was Ramat Hasharon's leading scorer and rebounder, and also averaged 17.1 points and 8.7 rebounds in Europe Cup play, and was named the Cup's Power Forward of the year.

Jackson finished the season with an unfortunate and unnecessary incident, as she punched Ramla's Ina Gourevitch following game 5 of the finals. Jackson was susspended from her WNBA team, Chicago, and later waved. Jackson was never arrested and no charges were filed at any time.

Ramat Hasharon said that Jackson turned down higher paying offers from other European teams to resign with them. Orna Ostfeld, head coach, said today: "As far as I'm concerned, getting Jackson back on the team was one of the most important things in building the roster for next season. Jackson is a high quality player who's fun to coach. She's a leader on and off the court and I'm glad she's staying with us. The Gourevitch incident after game 5 with Ramla was a one time slip. Deanna is simply an amazing person, and she has already paid a heavy price for that one moment of losing her temper".

It will be a pleasure to see how our players can play with other teams of the Championship.
