ABC Santiago South Champions (Again) -by Pedro Gomes

ABC revalidated its title as Santiago South regional champions, by defeating Predio 77 to 71, in the second game of the play-offs. ABC had won the first game by a small margin, 72 to 71. ABC, who had escaped a loss in the first game, entered the second playoff game with a much bigger determination than its opponent, who at least in the first period showed signs of apathy and discouragement.

ABC's excellent ball movement and high shooting percentage helped them build their victory in the first 5 minutes of the game. Starting the period with an 11-0 run. Predio looked nervous and anxious during the first period, with many players committing several defensive errors, which ABC took advantage, and finished the first period with a 23 point lead, score of 31 to 08.

In the second period, Predio opened with a much more organized and concentrated team, which allowed them to reduce the lead to 12 points, at halftime the score, was 34 to 46.

The second half began with ABC's clear intention to manage the lead; however they found a different Predio, with lots of determination and supplemental forces to dispute for the Win.

Predio improved its defense and shooting percentage in the fourth quarter, forcing ABC to commit many offensive and defensive errors. But, the advantage that ABC brought from the first period was crucial in their victory, 77 to 71, that guaranteed, the revalidation of its Santiago South title.

ABC is once again, Santiago South champion, they will represent the island of Santiago in the National Championships, which will start this week, in the Vava Duarte Pavilion, in the city of Praia.

Official Chinese Roster for Under-19 Championships Has 19 Players -by Arthur Volbert
The official FIBA website for the World Under-19 Championships has listed the roster for China's team and that team contains 19 players, 7 more than allowed. It contains all 12 players I was told were named to the team.

But in addition it contains Chen Jianghua (187-G-89), Zhou Peng, Ding Jinhui and Liu Xiaoyu, who have been playing in the NBA summer league in Las Vegas. It also contains Zheng Zhun, Zhang Jiadi and Liu Yahui, whom I was told had been cut from the team. It will be interesting to see who shows up for the game on July 12 against Serbia. Www.nbadraft.net reported that Chen has an ankle injury that will keep him out for two months.

It is possible that the national team players were named just as a precaution and will remain in Las Vegas. But it would not shock me if some or all of them showed up for the game against Serbia.

The likelihood is that Zheng Zhun, Zhang Jiadi and Liu Yahui were the last cuts from the team and were named as a precaution in case there were injuries and the national team members did not show up.

Note that Ding Jinhui is listed as being born in 1989 on the official roster and as being almost the same age as Zhou Peng. Relative ages are important even if real ages can't be trusted.

China's U19 team played practice games in Spain and beat Australia 73-70 and then lost to Spain 46-81 the next day. But Spain lost to Australia 70-79. But these were practice games -- some games you play to win and some games you play to practice.

China Loses to Knicks 88-65 -by Arthur Volbert
China went back to practicing rather than going all out to win in the NBA Summer League last night and was defeated by the New York Knicks 88-65. Liu Wei did not play this game and, despite all the knocks on him, China still is a better team when Liu plays. Liu Xiaoyu started in his place, played eight minutes, and had no points and one rebound.

Sun Yue played 29 minutes and had 9 assists to only 1 turnover. However he missed all 4 of his shots and scored only 2 points. Yi Jianlian missed all 6 shots he took so China's two NBA draftees were 0 for 10 shooting. Whereas yesterday Yi showed his upside, today he showed his downside, which is why it is so necessary for him to get NBA experience before the Beijing Olympics. Yi had 3 points, 2 rebounds, 5 turnovers and 9 personal fouls in 24 minutes.

Li Nan (198-F-76) played 18 minutes in his first appearance and scored 13 points on 5 of 7 shooting. Zhu Fangyu had 9 points on 2-2 shooting and 5-5 free throws in 17 minutes. Wang Zhizhi had 14 points and 3 rebounds in 19 minutes. Wang Shipeng had 13 points on 5-10 shooting in 31 minutes.

Zhang Songtao saw his first playing time but was scoreless in 5 minutes. Wang Lei and Zhou Peng were also scoreless in limited minutes. Ding Jinhui had 3 points and 3 rebounds in 9 minutes and consistently shows he can rebound against NBA competition.

China led 21-20 after the first quarter but was outscored 28-13 in the second. It outscored the Knicks 16-15 in the third quarter but lost the fourth quarter 25-15. Demitris Nichols, a draftee from Syracuse, led the Knicks with 14 points, Nate Robinson scored 11 and Randolph Morris and Renaldo Balkman each scored 10. The Knicks outrebounded China 34-23 and China had 29 turnovers to 22 for the Knicks.

Division B does not need a break -by Eurobasket News
Division B keeps the busy schedule every day. In comparison with Division A the games have been playing without a break. Last night was dedicated to Group A and B.

After a confident start of the tournament when they rallied past Czech Republic 62:45 Swedish team slowed down and suffered two straight losses. Led by Jonas Jerebko (204-F-87) Sweden got off to a quick start and capped the opening frame with an 11:0 run to put themselves ahead 16:9. Walsh and his way could well be the answer -by Santhosh Kumar
Buoyed by the overwhelming response on his recent visit to India, basketball coach J.D. Walsh is planning another visit to the country to conduct a camp in Chennai in the last week of August.
With the profile of the basketball looking mundane in the state, Walsh's trip will infuse some excitement to the basketball fraternity. Walsh, who is currently in Taiwan on a 10-day camp, visited India last month and organised clinics for children in Pune and Kashmir.
Walsh has become a household name in basketball coaching with his unique style and his ability to entwine fundamentals and life values.
I have created a technique and training regime that has been implemented by the National Basketball Association, NCAA league and players around the globe. With this concept, children worldwide have become connected and are achieving tremendous results, he said.
I have a strong belief in the fact that basketball is an art and can be played effortlessly with proper instruction and dedication, he added.
Walsh was all praise for the Indian youngsters for whom he conducted a camp in Pune and Kashmir. He said they have all the prerequisites and talented. Walsh also added that the kids are keen listeners.
I very well know the profile of basketball in the country. I think the Basketball Federation of India should start acting fast in order to catch up with the rest who are moving fast with modern coaching techniques. I think there is no dearth of talent in India. All you need is an active association with proper scouting of talent from the grass root level, he suggested.
Attributing the popularity of basketball in the US to the job security the game offered, Walsh said launching a well-organised professional league would help change the image of the game.
The pro-league will definitely increase the awareness about the game and it will also create new job opportunities for the players. So more youngsters will take up the game as their career, informed Walsh, revealing that he's planning to take a bunch of talented youngsters from India to his New York-based school for a free training programme.
Dubbed as Hoops for Health', Walsh signed a three-year contract with Child Nurture and Relief group to foster the empowerment of orphaned youth in Kashmir, where a 15-year-long conflict has left thousands of children orphaned and traumatised.
Shedding more lights on his Kashmir trip, Walsh said: I really had a great time with the kids. It was part of their re-education and re-integration process. We are going to utilise the powerful influence of sport as a means of psychosocial rehabilitation and community integration of children impacted by conflict. Working in a post conflict region was a real test for me. In future, we are hoping to recruit coaches, build a court and a team that can play games in India and Pakistan.

Heat's Walker victim of robbery -by Alex Yams

By The Associated Press
July 10, 2007

CHICAGO (AP) -- Miami Heat forward Antoine Walker's home in Chicago was robbed Monday, the player's agent said.

Police and witnesses said two offenders held Walker and at least one other person at gunpoint during the robbery, Chicago broadcasters reported from the scene in the city's River North neighborhood Monday night.

Walker's agent, Mark Bartelstein, confirmed the incident took place but said he could not give specific details.

"He's OK," Bartelstein told The Associated Press. "There was a robbery. It's a scary thing. It's a terrible thing. He's trying to get himself back together. Police are there and he's getting it taken care of."

Chicago Police spokesman Hector Alfaro said officers responded to a robbery at a home in the neighborhood about 7:30 p.m. EDT, but could not confirm that the home belonged to Walker. A vehicle, cash and jewelry were reported stolen and there were no injuries, Alfaro said.

Bartelstein said Walker was with a relative at the time of the incident.

Walker was not available for comment. The Heat were aware of the incident, a team official said, but had no other comment while they attempted to gather facts.

In July 2000, Walker -- then a Boston Celtic -- was the victim of an armed robbery along with NBA center Nazr Mohammed as they sat in a vehicle waiting for a restaurant on Chicago's South Side to open. Police said at the time that three men approached and demanded cash and valuables, which included a $55,000 wristwatch.

Walker, a three-time All-Star, averaged 8.5 points with Miami this past season and was a key part of the Heat's run to the 2006 NBA championship.

The Chicago native was part of the 1996 NCAA championship team at Kentucky and an all-state player at Mount Carmel High School.

AP Sports Writer Tim Reynolds in Miami contributed to this report.

Fisher May be Returning to the Lakers. -by Bryan Floyd
Fisher asked the Utah Jazz to release him from the final three years of his contract so he could move to one of the NBA cities with a treatment center equipped to handle his young daughter's rare form of eye cancer. The Los Angeles Lakers have emerged as the favorite to sign Fisher. Fisher, according to NBA front-office sources, is no longer even considering other teams and is on track to re-sign soon with the Lakers -- who drafted him in 1996 -- barring an unexpected snag in negotiations.

Walker signs for Jets -by Dave Ryan

The BiG Storage Cheshire Jets have landed BBL icon TJ Walker (186-G-75, agency: 123 Podium, college: Azusa Pacific) as their player/coach ahead of the 2007/08 season. The former Newcastle Eagle, a three-time BBL All-Star, put pen to paper late on Monday night.
The Jets' Director of Basketball, Paul Smith, commented: "This is a real coup for the club. TJ has consistently been the best guard in the league for the past five years and has been a target for a number of clubs, both in the BBL and further afield over the close season. It is a tribute to the vision for the future that TJ has chosen to come to Chester, and we look forward to a long and successful partnership."

Walker will take up his duties when he arrives back in the UK to oversee the coaching of Cheshire's young players at the club's basketball camp between 22nd and 27th July.
The point-guard, who has won the BBL Championship Playoffs twice, the BBL Trophy twice, and the BBL Championship and BBL Cup once each, said "This is the right place at the right time in my career - I am looking to develop my role as a coach so it was a real no-brainer. Chester is a real basketball city, the fans are so passionate and I want to help to put the club back to where it's supposed to be at - winning trophies."
Walker also revealed that work has begun on assembling the squad for the new campaign: "I have been talking with Paul Smith about possible players for the squad. Some names are already in the frame and we are united in our wish to put a really competitive side on the floor in September."
Walker will also play a prominent role in establishing the club's community programme , Hoops4Health, which is targeting 5,000 school pupils during the season: "I was involved with a similar project in Newcastle", he explained, "I can bring a lot of valuable experience about how it works. As well as promoting healthy lifestyles through regular exercise, the programme will try to establish the game more at a grass roots level - essential if basketball is to grow and prosper in the area."

Clark's the man for GB -by Dave Ryan
A scintillating performance from Dan Clark (210-C-88) saw Great Britain under-20 bounce back from Friday's 84-58 defeat against Finland to defeat Belgium 80-68 on Sunday.
Clark finished with 33 points,15 rebounds, three assists and three blocks and Jeff Jones' team produced a fine fourth period display.
All four teams in Group D of the European Championships B Divisions have one win from two games, and a victory against Romania on Tuesday will see Britain qualify for the quarter-finals.
Clark was given good support by London Leopards' forward Joe Ikhinmwin who finished with 12 points, shooting 100 percent from both the floor and the charity stripe.
A slow start from Britain saw Ikhinmwin score their only points in the first three minutes, but a Clark three-pointer saw GB take a 7-6 lead, and four more Clark points kept Britain ahead by a point at the midway stage of the period. Orlan Jackman converted one from two free-throws to stretch GB's lead to three, and a trey from Clark together with a Ashley Hamilton score extended their advantage to 18-13 with 2:45 on the clock. However a 9-2 run put Belgium back in control, and it took a Guy Guede free-throw to send Britain into the first break level at 24-24.
Neil Fraser scored the only point of the first two minutes with a single free-throw, and Jackman extended the British lead to three points with a jump shot. Belgium again responded with a 7-2 run to grab the lead, but Clark leveled the score with a pair of free throws, before draining a trey to again level after a Dreesen three.
Eight straight points looked to have put a Belgian side who had opened the competition with a 65-55 victory against Romania in control, but they were held scoreless during the final three and half minutes and three points from Clark plus two from Ikhinmwin saw them go into the locker room only trailing 41-39.
Belgium opened the second half with seven of the first nine points, Fraser's jump shot being Britain's only score, and although Hamilton converted a free-throw, Belgium continued to score freely and opened up a 54-43 lead midway through the period.
That proved to be as good as it got for Belgium, as five points from Guede and four from Danny Carter saw their lead cut to 54-52, and a Hamilton free-throw completed the 10-0 run.. A Gulliemyn trey broke the run, but Clark's lay-up saw Britain go into the final break trailing 57-55.
Estudiantes forward Clark leveled the score at the start of the fourth period before a De Zeeuw trey put Belgium back into the lead. Scores from Hamilton and Ikhinmwin saw Britain lead by one after three minutes, and although Tielens responded, a Fraser trey gave Britain a 64-62 lead with 5:07 remaining and they never trailed again.
A pair of Guede free-throws extended the lead, and back-to-back jumps shots from Clark saw Jones' team lead 72-67 with a minute remaining. A Marnegrave free-throw cut the lead to four, but a Hamilton dunk after collecting a rebound effectively wrapped things up with 21 seconds left, and Clark rounded off a fine individual performance with a pair of treys.
In Friday's game against Rumania, Guy Guede led the scoring with 12 points, backed up by ten from Reading Rockets' Danny Carter, while Daniel Clark collected nine rebounds to go with his eight points.
The first period gave no clue to the final outcome as Britain produced a good display. After going 3-0 down, a trey from Neil Fraser leveled the score, and after collecting his own rebound from a missed shot, Clark again leveled at 5-5. Guede gave Britain their first lead of the game with 2:08 on the clock, and Joe Ikhinmwin extended the advantage to 13-10 after collecting an offensive board. A Vanjoki trey leveled the score again, but Ashley Hamilton's lay-up after a Fraser steal sent GB into the first break with a 15-14 lead.
The start of the second period proved to be key, as Finland scored the first nine points as it took until the 5:41 mark for Carter to end the drought with a pair of free-throws. Carter kept the deficit to nine with a lay-up, but a Kanervo trey saw Finland open a 35-22 lead with 2:54 on the clock, and despite a lay-up from Guede and two successful free-throws from Carter, Britain went into the locker room trailing 37-28 at half-time.
Britain started the second half poorly, as they had only a Guede free-throw to show for their efforts in the first two and half minutes, with Finland scoring six points to open a 43-29 lead. A pair of Orlan Jackman jumper-shots reduced Jeff Jones' team's deficit to ten, and a Fraser trey followed by Clark's dunk narrowed the deficit to 45-38.
However, the Finns took control after that, and they closed out the third period with an 18-5 run to reach the final break with a comfortable 63-43 lead. A pair of Ikinhmwin scores kept Britain within 20 points during the opening stages of the four quarter, and Finland closed out the victory with 18 of the final 22 points.

HOLLAND - Women

NT: U16 Preparation starts with a tied series against England -by Leslie Anderson

With England and Holland in the same group for the European Championship, it was a good opportunity for both coaches to learn a little about the other team.

In the first match on Saturday, Holland dominated the first period with some excellent perimeter shooting to lead (23-10). In the second and third period both teams played cat and mouse, made lot of changes without giving much away but with the hosts holding on to the lead. Holland went into the final period leading by 7 points, England staged a comeback and came to within 3 points before a late spurt saw the home side home (57-49).

The second match on Sunday had no resemblance to first match. Holland went into the interval leading (32-31) due to their perimeter shooting. England stayed in touch with strong work under the boards. A radical change of tactics by England in the 3rd period put the hosts out of their stride as they lost the period (14-3). Things did not get better for the hosts as the first five minutes of the final period remained scoreless before England once again took control to win the match (53-40) and tie the series.

Rosanne Guijt is the only member of the current Dutch squad who played in last year European Championship.

Holland will take part in a 4-nation tournament this weekend with Ireland, Germany and Luxembourg in the next stage of their preparation.

Yvonne Lansink Rotgerink the current Head Coach, she took up the appointment 3 weeks ago after Hans Bais had to step down.

Japan U21 finished the FIBA U21 World Championship for Women on the 10th spot. In the game for the 9th place Japan was defeated by Spain 70:80. Asami Yoshida (165-G-87) exploded for 31 points but it wasn't enough for Japan. Her team mate Saori Fujiyoshi (-87) collected 12 in defeat. Blanca Marcos (177-G/F-87) led the winners with 22 points, while Anna Cruz (175-G-86) ended up with 17.

Asians had a great start and finished the first with 20:17. The Japanese stormed out to a 10-2 advantage and maintained a lead midway through the second quarter at 27:24 after a Kozue Tanaka three-ball. Only after that Spain woke up and went on a lead. Tall Ferns hit by injuries -by Eurobasket News
Assistant coach Leigh Gooding has been thrown in the deep end to prepare a beaten-up national women's basketball team for the William Jones Cup in Taiwan.
The Tall Ferns have flown out of Auckland without coach Mike McHugh, who is attending his son's wedding in England, and the squad down to nine fit players.
With guard Aroha Jennings returning to the University of Memphis, the squad had been reduced to 11. When they assembled for the trip to Taiwan, guard Angela Marino reported with a foot injury and centre Karlene Kingi had a dislocated shoulder.
During the morning practice, guard Micaela Cocks wound up on the wrong end of a teammate's elbow, opening up a bloody head wound.
She was patched up for the next session.
"No question this is a bit of a challenge," acknowledged Gooding, who was appointed coach of the Christchurch Sirens recently.
"It will certainly be a bit different to the one game I coached in Japan, having to prepare for game after game and dealing with the injuries as well. You can only go with what you've got."
The prognosis on Marino and Kingi is that they are unlikely to play, but with treatment from team doctor Lynne Coleman and physiotherapist Karen Sutton, they may just be able to suit up later in the tournament.
"The interesting game will be on Sunday (against Taiwan Blue) when Noni Wharemate is also unavailable for religious reasons," Gooding said.
"It would be nice to have Angela back for that one."
The Ferns face six games, including one against a useful looking Australian outfit who features four members of the 2006 world champion side - Hollie Grima, Emma Randall, Jenni Screen and Laura Summerton - in six days.
