Sofia Acevedo made the day's decisive shot for Argentina's women, and she needed it. Her two-pointer forced overtime against Paraguay at 15-15 on Day 4, Argentina won it 17-15, and she followed with 10 points in a 21-16 win over Puerto Rico, which finished Argentina's pool unbeaten. She scored nine against Paraguay. Paraguay advanced anyway, on the strength of an earlier upset of Puerto Rico, and Puerto Rico went out.
The United States women went through Pool B without difficulty. Sydney Taylor (175-G-2001, college: Louisville) scored 12 points, four of them from two-pointers, in a 21-7 win over Colombia. Flau'Jae Johnson (178-G, college: LSU) added eight in a 21-4 win over the Cayman Islands, again with four twos. Colombia took the second place and will meet Argentina in the quarter-finals, while the Americans play Paraguay. The other half of the field was fixed a day earlier. Canada won Pool A, beating El Salvador 21-6 with Cassandra Brown scoring nine points and taking six rebounds, then Venezuela 21-7, with Paige Crozon scoring seven. El Salvador took second place with a 21-14 win over Venezuela, eight of the points from Guadalupe Vazquez (175-G-2002), and the women have therefore reached the knockout rounds with a day to spare. Cuba's progress was more of a squeeze. They beat Chile 14-13 and Mexico 18-17 on Day 3, Anisleidys Galindo (181-SG-1989) scoring 10 points with seven rebounds in the first game and eight in the second. Cuba finished Pool C unbeaten, extending a five-game unbeaten run that began in the Qualifying Draw. Chile took the second place in the pool, and Mexico fell short of a knockout place. The quarter-finals, played on Day 5 with the semi-finals and final, are: Canada against Chile, Argentina against Colombia, the United States against Paraguay, and Cuba against El Salvador. Canada, Cuba, the United States and Argentina all arrive unbeaten, but two of Cuba's wins and Argentina's win over Paraguay were by two points or fewer, which is not much of a cushion. |
