BSL Round 5 (Second Stage): #1 Klosterneuburg is defeated by Wels

BSL is at the halfway of the Second Stage and there are still another 5 rounds left. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of top-ranked Dukes (22-5) on the court of third ranked Raiffeisen Flyers Wels on Thursday night. Visitors were defeated by Raiffeisen Flyers Wels 80-69. The game was mostly controlled by Wels. Klosterneuburg managed to win second period 21-19. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. 25 personal fouls committed by Dukes helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. German Radii Caisin (198-2001) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds for the winners and American forward Chris Ferguson (206-1989, college: Mid-Continent) chipped in 11 points and 12 rebounds. Raiffeisen Flyers Wels' coach Sebastian Waser used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American forward Will Carius (205-1998, college: W.Illinois) responded with 23 points and 9 rebounds. Wels have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain third place with 18-9 record having four points less than leader Kapfenberg, which they share with UBSC Graz. Klosterneuburg at the other side still keeps top position with five games lost. Wels is looking forward to face Traiskirchen (#5) on the road in the next round. Klosterneuburg will play against St.Poelten (#6) and is hoping to win this game.
Bottom-ranked Furstenfeld Panthers managed to get a second victory, breaking the series of four consecutive losses. This time they edged eleventh-ranked Nord Dragonz in Eisenstadt 77-74. American guard Hegel Augustin (190, college: PVAMU) nailed a double-double by scoring 33 points (!!!), 24 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals for the winning side and Joe Hampton accounted for 22 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Croatian center Mario Spaleta (209-1995, agency: Starting 5) came up with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 14 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) for Nord Dragonz in the defeat. Furstenfeld maintains twelfth place with 2-25 record. Eisenstadt lost third consecutive game. They keep the eleventh position with 24 games lost. Furstenfeld will play against higher ranked Kapfenberg (#7) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Eisenstadt will play against Timberwolves (#10) in Vienna and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
The game in St.Poelten was also quite interesting. Second ranked Gmunden Swans (20-7) played at the court of 6th ranked UBC St. Poelten (13-14). Gmunden Swans defeated UBC St. Poelten 86-76 on Thursday. The best player for the winners was Toni Blazan who scored 20 points. MJ Randolph produced 28 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists for the hosts. Defending champion maintains second place with 20-7 record having just two points less than leader Kapfenberg. St.Poelten lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the sixth position with 14 games lost. They share it with Oberwart. Gmunden will meet at home UBSC Graz (#4) in the next round. St.Poelten will play against the league's leader Klosterneuburg and hope to secure a win.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 5: Vienna was destroyed by Kapfenberg on the opponent's court 123-70. Oberwart managed to outperform Timberwolves in a home game 86-70. Traiskirchen recorded a loss to UBSC Graz on the road 87-72.



Kapfenberg - Vienna 123-70

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 8th ranked BC Vienna's (14-13) road loss to seventh ranked Kapfenberg Bulls (15-11) 70-123 on Thursday. The game without a history. Kapfenberg led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Kapfenberg Bulls shot 62.5 percent from the field. Kapfenberg Bulls outrebounded BC Vienna 41-29 including a 35-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. Kapfenberg Bulls shot the lights out from three sinking 18 long-distance shots on high 60.0 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. The best player for the winners was Canadian point guard Ali Sow (185-1998, college: Laurier) who scored 31 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. American forward Noah Baumann (198-1999, college: GCU) chipped in 30 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals (on 12-of-15 shooting from the field). Kapfenberg Bulls' coach Antonio Herrera felt very confident that he used 10 players and allowed the starting five to rest. The former international center Jozo Rados (206-1993) produced 17 points and 6 rebounds and Croatian forward Ivan Siriscevic (197-1987, agency: PEPI SPORT) added 16 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the guests. Five Kapfenberg Bulls and four BC Vienna players scored in double figures. Kapfenberg maintains seventh place with 15-11 record. Loser BC Vienna keeps the eighth position with 13 games lost. Kapfenberg will meet bottom-ranked Furstenfeld (#12) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Vienna will play against Oberwart (#9) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

The game in St.Poelten was also quite interesting. Second ranked Gmunden Swans (20-7) played at the court of 6th ranked UBC St. Poelten (13-14). Gmunden Swans defeated UBC St. Poelten 86-76 on Thursday. The guests trailed by 8 points after first quarter, but they rallied back getting tie in the second period and winning the second half and won the game by 10 points. Gmunden Swans looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The best player for the winners was the former international forward Toni Blazan (197-1992, agency: Mansfield and Associates) who scored 20 points. The former international guard Daniel Friedrich (181-1992) chipped in 14 points and 7 assists. Four Gmunden Swans players scored in double figures. Everything could happen at the game between two tied teams. Both fourth ranked UBSC Graz and 5th ranked Arkadia Lions had identical 17-9 record.
