Jason Gardner scored 5 of his team best 21pts in the last minute breaking a 75-75 tie leading Ewe Baskets Oldenburg to an exciting 80-75 home win over ratiopharm Ulm Saturday night at Ewe Arena in Oldenburg. Ulm opened strong behind Sean Finn's hot start helping the guests take a 17-13 lead after 1Q. Oldenburg answered in Q2 outscoring their guests 23-14 in taking a 36-31 halftime lead. Head Coach Predrag Krunic and his Thunderbirds extended their advantage to as many as 16 points in the 3Q outscoring Ulm 28-20 with transition baskets and 3pt shots. Ulm's rookie forward Dan Fitzgerald buried three straight threes pulling his team back to 64-51 after three. Storming back with a 4Q comeback, ratiopharm Ulm cut the deficit with big baskets from Sean Finn, Romeo Travis and Dru Joyce and free throws from Jeff Gibbs. Finally evening the score at 75 on a Sean Finn basket, the stage was set for Oldenburg's Jason Gardner. A strong driving finish down the lane resulted in a game-breaking three point play giving Oldenburg a 78-75 lead with 18sec to play. On Ulm's ensuing possession, an errant pass was tracked down by Gardner and officials whistled an intentional foul on Ulm's Lee Humphrey after the Oldenburg guard raced down the left sideline. Gardner's 2FT sealed the thrilling home win. Oldenburg's perimeter players keyed the win with Gardner producing 21pt 7reb 5ast, Rickey Paulding 16pt 4reb and Je'kel Foster 13pt for the Thunderbirds. Sean Finn led Ulm scoring with 21pt 6reb 2blks while Jeff Gibbs added 11pt 9reb. Forwards Romeo Travis and Dan Fitzgerald chipped in 11pt 4reb apiece. Oldenburg shot 50% from the floor and 8 of 24 (33%) from three and 14 of 26 FT (53%) while ratiopharm Ulm sank 47% from the floor, 4 of 13 (30%) from three and 17 of 28 FT (60%). Oldenburg improved to 3-2 while ratiopharm Ulm fell to 4-1.
