ETB Miners erase 36-point deficit in one of the greatest comebacks in German basketball history to claim ProB title-May 18, 2026
Down 36 points on aggregate. Written off by everyone outside the Sportpark Am Hallo. And then chaos. ETB Miners Essen produced one of the most extraordinary comebacks in German basketball history on Saturday, obliterating OrangeAcademy Ulm 94-53 in the second leg of the ProB Final to overturn a 36-point first-leg deficit and claim the 2025-26 ProB Meisterschaft by a cumulative margin of five points. Read those numbers again. Game 1 in Ulm: OrangeAcademy 107, ETB Miners 71. A 36-point annihilation. Series over, everyone assumed. Game 2 in Essen: ETB Miners 94, OrangeAcademy 53. A 41-point destruction the other way. Aggregate: Essen 165, Ulm 160. Champions.
ProB Player of the Year Quashawn Lane (188-G-1999, college: New Haven) was the heartbeat of the comeback, delivering the three plays that sealed the title in a breathless final sequence. After neither team could score for nearly four and a half minutes in the closing stretch the aggregate locked at level Lane converted a layup to break the deadlock. Zoran Milicic (197-PG-2006) then drained a three-pointer to equalize the overall series. With 22 seconds remaining, Ulm fouled Lane, who sank both free throws to put Essen ahead by two on aggregate. On the ensuing possession, Lane stole the ball and scored on a fast-break layup to seal the championship and send the Sportpark Am Hallo into pandemonium.
The hosts were sensational from the opening tip. Knowing they needed to outscore Ulm by 37 across 40 minutes, Essen attacked with relentless defensive intensity and offensive precision that was unrecognizable from the first leg. They won every quarter 27-13, 26-19, 23-12, 18-9 never allowing the young Ulm side to settle into any rhythm. The OrangeAcademy, so devastating with 107 points in Game 1, managed just 53 less than half their first-leg output.
The Miners, who topped the ProB Nord in the regular season and swept through the playoffs unbeaten until the first-leg hammering, saved their defining performance for the moment of maximum adversity. Their semifinal victory over BBC Coburg had already secured sporting promotion rights to the ProA, but the Meisterschaft was the prize they came for.
OrangeAcademy the Ulm youth academy side who topped ProB Sud and eliminated Bernau en route to the final came agonizingly close to the title despite the second-leg collapse. A handful of additional points in Essen would have been enough. Both finalists earn sporting promotion to the ProA for 2026-27.
