There was no surprise when 14th ranked Crailsheim Merlins (5-12) were defeated at home by sixth ranked Deutsche Bank Skyliners (12-5) 72-56. The game was mostly controlled by Deutsche Bank Skyliners. Crailsheim Merlins was better in third quarter 15-14. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Deutsche Bank Skyliners dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Crailsheim Merlins' 22. Deutsche Bank Skyliners forced 23 Crailsheim Merlins turnovers. International center Johannes Voigtmann (210-92) nailed a double-double by scoring 19 points and 12 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winning side and international Danilo Barthel (207-91) accounted for 13 points. American swingman Shy Ely (193-87, college: Evansville) came up with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists and the other American import point guard Jordan Callahan (184-90, college: Tulane) added 17 points respectively for Crailsheim Merlins in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. The victory was the third consecutive win for Deutsche Bank Skyliners. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Ludwigsburg and EWE Baskets. Crailsheim Merlins at the other side keep the fourteenth position with 12 games lost. Deutsche Bank Skyliners will have a break next round. Crailsheim Merlins will play again on the road against Deutsche Bank Skyliners (#5) in Frankfurt and hope to win that game.
