Very predictable result when sixth ranked Schalke (11-10) defeated at home 12th ranked Recklinghausen (4-17) 75-61 on Saturday. Schalke made 26-of-29 free shots (89.7 percent) during the game. Recklinghausen was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. American guard Courtney Belger (187-89, college: Quincy) stepped up and scored 24 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line) for the winners and naturalized Russian forward Nikita Khartchenkov (200-87) chipped in 14 points and 12 rebounds. The best for the losing side was American power forward Tre Hale-Edmerson (206-92, college: CS Northridge) with 19 points and 8 rebounds and the other American import point guard Chris Iles (180-89, college: Xavier, LA) scored 13 points and 7 rebounds. Four Recklinghausen players scored in double figures. Schalke moved-up to fifth place in North, which they share with Bochum. Loser Recklinghausen keeps the twelfth position with 17 games lost. Schalke will face higher ranked Artland Dragons (#3) in Quakenbrueck in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Recklinghausen will play at home against Rostock (#9) and hope to win that game.
