Regular Season Round 9: Trier - Heidelberg 87-76

We should mention about the upset which took place in Trier, where higher ranked MLP Academics Heidelberg (5-4) lost to eleventh ranked Gladiators (4-5) in a road game 76-87. Gladiators made 18-of-19 charity shots (94.7 percent) during the game. Gladiators outrebounded MLP Academics Heidelberg 35-20 including a 29-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great shooting night for Gladiators especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.9 percentage. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 24 assists. Power forward Johannes Joos (206-95) nailed a double-double by scoring 30 points and 12 rebounds (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line) for the winning side and point guard Kevin Smit (183-91) accounted for 13 points and 4 assists. American swingman Shy Ely (193-87, college: Evansville, agency: Diamond Sports) came up with 17 points and 5 assists and the other American import forward Evan McGaughey (203-94, college: Quincy, agency: Slash Sports) added 12 points and 6 rebounds respectively for MLP Academics Heidelberg in the defeat. Five MLP Academics Heidelberg players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Gladiators moved-up to tenth place, which they share with Chemnitz. MLP Academics Heidelberg at the other side dropped to the seventh position with four games lost. Gladiators' next round opponent will be Uni Baskets (#12) in Paderborn.
