Regular Season Round 27: Politekhnik - Zaporizhye 81-96

Bottom-ranked Zaporizhye managed to get a sixth victory, breaking the series of two consecutive losses. This time they won against seventh-ranked Politekhnik in Kharkiv 96-81. It's especially surprising that the victory came too easily and 15-point difference proves that Zaporizhye was well-prepared to that game. It looked good early as Politekhnik took a 10-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Zaporizhye took control winning next two quarters and eventually winning the game that evening by 15 points. They dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Politekhnik's 38. They outrebounded Politekhnik 43-29 including a 35-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. Politekhnik was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a good game for the former international guard Oleksii Shchepkin (191-89) who led his team to a victory with 29 points (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field). Guard Andriy Kozhemiakin (190-96, agency: Stanislav Ryzhov) contributed with 14 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. American guard Bo Barnes (193-90, college: Arizona St., agency: Haylett Sports) answered with 22 points and 6 assists and guard Roman Kozlov (190-90) added 24 points in the effort for Politekhnik. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Zaporizhye (6-21) moved-up to seventh place, which they share with defeated Politekhnik. Politekhnik lost sixth consecutive game. Zaporizhye will play against league's leader Dnipro on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Politekhnik will play against Mykolaiv (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
