Regular Season Round 11: Interkhim - Dnipro 80-71

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Odessa. Second ranked Interkhim faced their close opponent Dnipro. Host Interkhim (9-2) defeated guests from Dnipro (4-5) 80-71. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 27-11. But Dnipro won second period 17-15. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Interkhim dominated down low during the game scoring 46 of its points in the paint compared to Dnipro's 24. They outrebounded Dnipro 50-33 including a 36-23 advantage in defensive rebounds. Interkhim looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Interkhim made 7 blocks. The best player for the winners was the former international center Yevgeniya MBaye (192-1992) who scored 23 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. The former international guard Olena Samburska (175-1989) chipped in 20 points and 6 rebounds. Interkhim's coach Iryna Shchipakina used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Guard Kseniya Afanasyeva (170-1993) produced 20 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals and guard Tetyana Kulinok (165-1991) added 21 points respectively for the guests. Four Dnipro players scored in double figures. Interkhim have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain second place with 9-2 record having eight points less than leader Kyiv Basket which they share with defeated Dnipro. Dnipro lost fifth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keeps the second position with five games lost. Interkhim will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Dnipro will play on the road against the league's leader Frankivsk in Ivano-Frankivsk and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
