Regular Season Round 2: MBC - Bremerhaven 78-86

Craig Callahan topscored with 20pt 5reb while Torrell Martin added 18pt 6reb and Donald Copeland had 18pt 6ast leading Eisbaren Bremerhaven to an 86-78 road win over MBC Friday night at Stadthalle in Weissenfels. As a team, Bremerhaven shot 55% from the floor making 10 of 20 threes and 26 of 36 FT (72%) while outrebounding MBC 25-23 in winning the front end of their weekend road trip. Wayne Bernard hit five of nine threes to lead MBC scoring with 26pt followed by 16pt 8reb from Jerome Tillmann, 12pt 6ast from Michael Jordan and 10pt from Sascha Leutloff in the season-opening loss. Wayne Bernard buried 2 early 3s sparking a strong MBC start. Sascha Leutloff and Guido Grunheid kept the run going and the Wolves built an early 12-2 lead. Sean Denison, Richard Chaney and Torrell Martin responded for the Eisbaren and Bremerhaven cut the gap to 12-9 by the 5min mark. But hot shooting helped the MBC team to a 19-11 lead after 1Q. Vassil Evtimov scored to stretch MBC's lead to 21-11 early in Q2. Torrell Martin and Guido Grunheid exchanged scores. Wayne Bernard buried his 3rd 3 of the first half. Craig Callahan scored for Bremerhaven and MBC led 24-15. A Jerome Tillmann bucket added to the MBC advantage 26-15. MBC later called timeout leading 28-20 with 5:30 left in the first half. Out of the timeout, another Callahan score pulled Bremerhaven to 28-22 but Jerome Tilmann answered with a score for the hosts. Evtimov scored to give MBC a 32-22 lead and Bremerhaven used a timeout with 4min to go. Out of the timeout, Richard Chaney drilled a key 3 and Torrell Martin scored bringing Bremerhaven back to 32-27 at the 3min mark. Sean Denison brought the Eisbaren closer with 1FT and Torrell Martin added 2FT cutting Bremerhaven to 32-30 with 2min. A Michael Jordan 3 sparked MBC but Richard Chaney matched it with a 3 of his own for Bremerhaven. Jerome Tillmann got a bucket for MBC and 1FT from Sean Denison closed scoring in the first half with MBC holding a 37-34 lead. The 3Q started with a Sascha Leutloff score and another from Guido Grunheid followed lifting MBC to a 41-34 lead. Bremerhaven's Torrell Martin and MBC's Wayne Bernard exchanged buckets before Donald Copeland brought Bremerhaven to 43-38. An Andrew Drevo 3 cut the deficit to 43-41 but Jerome Tillmann answered for MBC. Another Torrell Martin basket pulled Bremerhaven within 45-43 at the 5min mark of the Q. Guido Grunheid scored for MBC and Donald Copeland made 1FT for the Eisbaren. But a big Andrew Drevo 3 evened the score at 37 at the 3:48 mark of the third. Jerome Tillmann pushed MBC back on top with a score but a Jermaine Thomas 3 gave Bremerhaven a 50-49 lead with 2:21 in the third. Wayne Bernard sank another 3 giving MBC a 52-50 lead but Bremerhaven's Craig Callahan evened the score at 52 and Donald Copeland gave the Eisbaren a 55-52 lead after hitting a big 3 with 1:10 to play. Callahan added 1FT and Bremerhaven was up 56-52 late in the 3Q before Jerome Tilmann and Copeland traded baskets. Bremerhaven held a 58-54 lead going into the 4th. Craig Callahan scored for Bremerhaven to open the 4Q and Richard Chaney chipped in a FT giving the Eisbaren a 61-54 lead at the 9min mark. Sascha Leutloff finished a three point play for MBC pulling the Wolves within 61-57. But Bremerhaven's Torrell Martin sank 1FT before 2FT from Callahan and the Eisbaren held a 64-57 lead. Moments later, a key 3 from Donald Copeland extended the Eisbaren advantage to ten, 67-57. Torrell Martin scored and later added 1FT before Donald Copeland buried a 3 giving Bremerhaven a 73-57 lead with 3min to play. Wayne Bernard hit a three and another score rallying MBC to 73-62. 1 Jermaine Thomas FT for Bremerhaven was followed by a Michael Jordan 3 with 1:25 to go. Jermaine Thomas sank 2 more FT keeping the Eisbaren up 76-65. Sascha Leutloff and Craig Callahan exchanged scores before Michael Jordan made another 3. MBC trailed 78-70. Wayne Bernard finished a 3pt play with 25sec bringing the Wolves within 78-73. Donald Copeland made 2FT for Bremerhaven before a fast Jermain Tillmann score for MBC. 2 more Copeland FT gave the Eisbaren an 82-75 advantage with 22sec. A quick Mike Jordan 3 cut the score to 82-78 with 14sec, but 2 Torrell Martin FT extended the Eisbaren advantage to 84-78 with 11sec. MBC was forced to foul again and this time Richard Chaney added the finishing touches to Bremerhaven's 86-78 road win over the Wolves.
