Regular Season Round 8: Taipans - Hawks 80-62

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Cairns. Third ranked Cairns Taipans faced one of their biggest challengers Wollongong Hawks. Host Cairns Taipans (9-4) defeated guests from Gwynneville (9-7) 80-62. The game was mostly controlled by Cairns Taipans. Wollongong Hawks managed to win third quarter 26-11. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The best player for the winners was British-New Zealand guard Phill Jones (196-74) who scored 14 points. The former international guard Daniel Dillon (191-86, college: Arizona) chipped in 7 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Four Cairns Taipans players scored in double figures. Cairns Taipans' coach used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American guard Gary Ervin (186-83, college: Arkansas) produced 21 points and center Larry Davidson (207-83, college: Boise St.) added 15 points respectively for the guests. Cairns Taipans has a solid three-game winning streak. Despite that victory Cairns Taipans went down to fourth position due to points difference. Wollongong Hawks lost fifth consecutive game. They dropped to the fifth place with seven games lost. Cairns Taipans are looking forward to face league's leader New Zealand Breakers in Auckland in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Wollongong Hawks will play on the road against Kings (#9) in Sydney and are hoping to prove to their fans that they can break losing series.
