An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Gwynneville. First ranked New Zealand Breakers faced 4th ranked Wollongong Hawks. Guests from Auckland (12-3) defeated host Wollongong Hawks (9-6) 89-85. Wollongong Hawks were tied at the half but could not keep up in last two quarters eventually losing the game. Worth to mention a great performance of guard Kirk Penney (196-80, college: Wisconsin) who helped to win the game recording 22 points. American forward Gary Wilkinson (206-82, college: Utah St.) contributed with 15 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. New Zealand Breakers' coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American guard Gary Ervin (186-83, college: Arkansas) replied with 31 points and 7 assists and center Larry Davidson (207-83, college: Boise St.) added 11 points and 13 rebounds in the effort for Wollongong Hawks. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. New Zealand Breakers maintains first position with 12-3 record. Wollongong Hawks lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the fourth place with six games lost. New Zealand Breakers will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Wollongong Hawks will play at home against Gold Coast Blaze (#6) in Broadbeach and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
