Regular Season Round 10: Tigers - Breakers 80-90

Leader New Zealand Breakers delivered the twelfth victory on Saturday night. This time they beat 8th ranked Melbourne Tigers (5-9) 90-80. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Melbourne Tigers. Melbourne Tigers were tied after three quarters but could not keep up in the last quarter eventually losing the game. Guard Kirk Penney (196-80, college: Wisconsin) scored 25 points to lead the charge for the winners and American forward Gary Wilkinson (206-82, college: Utah St.) chipped in 18 points during the contest. At the losing side Jamaican-American guard Corey Williams (191-77, college: Alabama St.) responded with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 12 rebounds and the former international center Luke Nevill (218-86, college: Utah) produced a double-double by scoring 14 points and 12 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. New Zealand Breakers maintains first position with 12-3 record. Melbourne Tigers at the other side dropped to the seventh place with nine games lost. They share the position with 36ers. New Zealand Breakers will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Melbourne Tigers will play against Kings (#9) in Sydney and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
