Regular Season Round 22: Tochigi Brex - Toyota Alvark 73-74

Sixth-ranked Tochigi Brex (8-14) gave a tough game to second ranked Toyota Alvark (15-7) on Sunday. The visitors from Fuchu managed to secure only one-point victory 74-73. However their fans expected much easier game. The guests trailed by 12 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 2-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 74-73. Toyota Alvark forced 20 Tochigi Brex turnovers. Strangely Tochigi Brex outrebounded Toyota Alvark 42-27 including a 27-13 advantage in defensive rebounds. 24 personal fouls committed by Tochigi Brex helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American forward Jeff Gibbs (188-80, college: Otterbein) scored 17 points and 9 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and the other American import forward Philip Ricci (202-80, college: Oregon St.) chipped in 10 points and 5 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side international guard Takuya Kawamura (193-86) responded with 26 points and 8 rebounds and American center Scott Merritt (208-82, college: Marquette) produced a double-double by scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds. Tochigi Brex's coach Bruce Palmer rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Despite the victory Toyota Alvark stay at second position having just two points less than leader Aishin. Tochigi Brex lost fourth consecutive game. Defending champion The team is currently in sixth place with a 8-14 record. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
